determining trail camera placement

Whats the best way position for for your trail camera? Is it over bait, attractants, etc., do you like putting it on a trail they use to and from bedding? Im not using a feeder but I am putting out a few attractants.

All those spots can be good, put it where you may want to hunt or close, they can cover a decent width up close. You can move it as you see what you want.

If you are hunting active trails, then that's a good spot to see what is moving.

Water if you have limited sources of it. Trails are great also. If I put a TC on a trail I usually set it a bit higher of the ground and angle it downward in tight cover. On more open trails I will angle it down the trail. I have set a TC back off a main trail at a right angle and used bait to stop the deer.

I've got one over a feeder and one on a heavily used trail. If you put it on a trail, put it parallel with their lane of travel, so they're walking towards/away from the camera. If they're walking across the view you won't get near the pictures.

Also, don't point the camera towards the sunrise or sunset. It tends to wash out the pics.

Trigger speed. If less than 1 second, you can have it on a trail and even place it perpendicular to the trail without missing much walking game. For slower triggers speeds, those cameras a best placed in areas where deer might loiter...corn/protein feeder, water source, mineral site, etc. If slower trigger speed camera is placed on a trail, try to aim it down the trail to capture the game. Best to face cameras north and south to avoid morning/evening sun glare. Trim tall grass and vines in front of camera and make sure there are no overhanging branches nearby as well. Otherwise, your night pics will have a 'white out' effect. I use the low glow infrared cameras and I like to place my cameras several feet up off the ground and have them at a downward angle. Deer seem to notice them less the farther from the ground they are. Hope this helps some.

I like putting mine over creek crossings, under big white oak trees and trails. Some trails are our 4 wheeler trails. You would be surprised what kind of deer use those.
If you want to fill up your card with the same deer day in day out, along with all the coons as well, set it up over a feeder. Want to see what kind of bucks you really have, set it up over some hand thrown corn.

small opening out in the thickest mess you can find..the old lazy ones will find that opening.
