Hand corn dropping scent?

Ok all those who hand corn, are you using gloves or anything to help reduce your scent signature on the corn or do the deer just not really care since it is food?

I am thinking of a couple places to hand corn for bow season around my set ups but don't want to pollute the area with scent and have myself busted before the hunt starts...

I usually fill a coffee can and sprinkle as I go in. Never had an issue but that's me. Always made me wonder as well. Good luck.

Just grab a hand full and sling it.

You will leave more scent walking in and out, than what gets left behind on the corn. Also your scent will start to disseminate and I believe deer can tell relatively by strength of the smell, whether you're a close danger, or a long gone threat.

I have had deer coming out and starting eating corn, shortly after throwing it out, they get used to what is danger or routine.

What kind of timing have you had with regard to throwing/slinging and hunting over it? Minutes, hours, days?

Guess I am asking if you throw and hunt right away. I have cattle on the lease that free roam, sometimes interrupting a hunt at the wrong time, but if I throw corn and need to wait overnight or something, chances are the cows will find it and it will be gone. I am looking at throwing corn and hunting within a few hours at most.

If I was looking to hand corn a spot and hunt it almost immediately, I would put it in an area that is traveled frequently. At that point, you are more using it to make them stop than you are using it as an attractant.

If you want to set up a corn spot to draw deer to you, it would need to be out longer. Not to say a few won't find it, but you are going to get alot of traffic.

I wouldn't worry much about the cows. They have a hard time picking up kernels off the ground and typically will give up on it after awhile and move on. Just make sure that you spread it out and don't pile it up.

As far as scent, I have never had an issue with using my hand to throw it.

Yes "handcorning" would prolly run them away... But not because of your sent... Dump 150lbs out before you hunt and they will look up and thank you

Agree with TREX on the cows, if the corn is spread out, they will make a bigger mess just trying to get it.

I have poured out corn, left the bag under the bow stand and hunted, still saw good deer, albeit my stand sat behind and kind of in a ceder tree.

It's funny, people say all the time cows won't mess with small spread out messes of corn, but the cows on my
Lease buck that trend for sure. The lick up every kernel or corn.

Having said that, this would be along a well travelled trail going to a feeder, so it would be more of a stopper along the trail and not an attractant.

I have had them stick around much longer than I wanted and slobber all over every last kernel, but never had any clean up a pile.

You should be good putting it out on a well traveled trail

I hunt with cows they are amazing to farmers but evil to hunters... UNLESS they are rotated through the pasture at the right time of year... They can be a landowner/hunters best tool

You would probably be better off corning the place that you plan on hunting as often as you can before season. Not just as an attractant, but to get the deer accustomed to your scent in the area not being a threat.

Our cows would pick up every single piece of corn if you dumped an entire bag out and placed them ten feet apart. We got lucky and he pulled the cows last year and I was able to have hand corn areas. Right now they will find it that day no matter where I hide it on 2000 acres. We hand corn between our stands and feeders since most of our feeders are from 30 to 60 yrds from the stand. We keep a bunch of crown royal bags and fill them up and dump them at twenty yards almost every hunt. Never seen deer spook on the hand corn but have seen hogs spook on it several times.

I've corned one spot, next to a pond, for a few years. It seems that the deer have come to expect it, and I don't have to start well before the season. As for my scent, it doesn't appear to be a factor at all.

Go see the Kansas Thread in Photo's the Gentleman that has SMOKED some Monster Deer up there will have to sit his cigarette down to pick his Bow up

But he should light it with a match because lighters leave sent

I've never had a problem with hand corning. In fact it brings in the deer just as good as a spin feeder. Most of the time, I have deer along the edge of the brush waiting on me to finish throwing it out. Scent does not seem to bother them.

Just throw corn and don't spend a lot of time messing around spreading scent.

Last year, I was hunting on my boss's ranch where the deer are pretty thick. I was hunting out of a stand about 100 yards from a feeder, but since I brought both my rifle and bow, I thought I'd throw some corn to bring the deer in closer. I walked about halfway to the feeder and sprinkled corn from there to my blind. I climbed up the ladder to the blind, sat down, looked back, and saw 4 does looking at me while eating the corn. I know that doesn't happen everywhere, but it was pretty cool.

The way i see it is at least the deer will know your smell. Just maybe they'll forget when the wind changes and you'll get that shot.
