I saw some really tiny ones out there the other day. I bet they were a dwarf subspecie. I think they are starting to lose their spots now though.

I follow axis pretty comprehensively and I have not heard of any sightings or axis deer taken in Parker county. However, with that being said - one thing I have learned is that axis have pretty much moved all over the state. I wouldn't be surprised to hear of one taken in Parker county or any other place in Texas. I know for a fact there is a small self-sustaining herd in south Dallas county along the river because I have seen them with my own eyes. With axis being stocked on HF ranches across the state, it would not be surprising that escapees could be roaming just about anywhere - especially along river drainages.

I have seen them in Okalla, and I know of folks who have them on cams in Coke county, Brown county, and even up towards Memphis. Had somebody send me some pics a few years ago of axis in a pine ticket that he claims was down north of Beaumont.

Of course, random sightings in northern climes is no guarantee that animals will survive a winter - but the critters in south Dallas seem to have survived a while. (Incidentally, the last few trips south to the coast I have seen some free-range blackbuck just south of Cameron).

One thing I have noticed though - the bucks in the northern parts of Texas don't seem to grow antlers as large the hill country - at least, I have not seen a pic of a really large one (34-35" or better) up here except those transplanted on game ranches.

Someone showed me a pic of a small axis buck running with some Mule deer and he told me the pic was from far West Texas. Definitely axis. Definitely mule deer. And pretty sparse territory that would be consistent with West texas like out by Sanderson - but I have only his word on where the pic was taken.

I also saw a pic once of an axis that was standing on an escarpment that could have been in panhandle (think Caprock Canyons) but I don't really know where the pic was taken.

As I said, it wouldn't surprise me to find axis free range anywhere in Texas now.

Sounds reasonable, for sure. I've seen a few escapees near our place. Not in any numbers though. I think it's only a matter of time though.

The farthest north I have ever seen a herd alive was off 16 between San Saba and Goldthwaite , near the Colorado river. Not sure exactly where, but was driving down one night about 2am and had a group of 12-15 cross the road, and there was at least one really nice buck in the group.

Our lease is about 1/2 mile south of the Colorado in San Saba County, just west of FM 45. We had one member take a young Axis buck last year, and have seen a few more on cameras over the last 2 years. Would love to see a heard grow in our area.

Texican, i have seen 2 axis does on 718 near 114. Had pics on my phone but they were to far to tell. Full grown and full of spots, out of fawning season.

Saw on one of the threads on here a while back about a dead axis on the side of the road just outside of Denton. Dont remember the exact hwy though.

As said above, it's only a matter of time before they start growing in numbers up this way.

I almost hit a really good buck on 71 between Columbus and La Grange on night. Been a couple years ago. Right by that gas station everyone stops at.

Following the Colorado river basin I'm sure.

Don't think Parker county has very many free range running around but I bet there are a few loose. Lots of Auduad though along I-20 on the Parker/Palo Pinto County line, several people in the area have shot them and there has been a few hit trying to cross the Interstate.

Quite a few around Possum Kingdom lake area, see them dead along road. They are dumber than a rock and walk out in the road and look at a car. rifle
