Dead fawn in feeder pen

Dead fawn in feeder pen - 07/21/15 11:05 PM

I went to the lease to fill feeders and found a dead fawn that had gotten hung up in my pen. It's back leg was caught in the top. I checked the cam and the feeder has no traffic like before. I removed the carcass. Will they ever come back or should I move the whole thing somewhere else ?

They would come back even if you left the carcass there.

Had this happen several years ago at my best feeder. Deer activity dropped by 90% or more. I wrapped wire around the rear legs of the carcass and drug it with the ATV probably 1/2 mile away or more. Activity never returned to normal until the following year though.

Dadgum. Sure hate to hear that. I'd move it elsewhere.

I've never had one hang up with hog/cow panels. If your using wire or wire at the top over panels I would get rid of it. A 40 inch panel will keep the cows and hogs out but be a pretty easy jump for deer. 2cents

I guess I've been lucky all these years. How high are your panels?

I use barbed wire but only three strands and the bottom strand is pretty high off the ground so they can crawl under which they do. We don't have hogs on the place, though.

The panels are flush with the ground so 42 inches I would guess

We had a doe get caught in a snare in late September in an area that we hand corn. The trapper took her out of the snare but left the carcass about fifteen feet away. Deer would eat corn up to about 20' from the carcass but wouldn't get any closer. I think if you've hauled the carcass away they'll be back. I wouldn't move it for 4-6 weeks, see what happens.

I have had deer eat the bones of dead deer. I think some people have very little under standing of what wild animals eat and are afraid and not afraid of.
