anyone hunt ne texas

Wondering what you guys would recommend planting for a fairly small food plot in far ne texas? Surprisingly there are no oaks on the property although lots of water. Probably 25 acres of water on 90 acres.

I appreciate any and all advise. Oh also i cannot get equipment (plow, dics, etc.) back to the area i am setup at

Rye grass unless it's heavily grazed or frequently mowed loses it's palatablity quickly. You didn't mention type of plot, summer, fall, winter, it'll all make a difference. How much acreage for the food plot? If you have internal roads can you plant the roadsides?

Will be trying a fall/winter plot. Probably two 1/4 plots. And we may be able to plant some roads. (Fiance's grandparents place) no cattle and doesnt seem to be alot of grazing otherwise.

I would talk to a local seed company for their recommendation, but a mixture of turnips and winter rye/wheat/triticale, on the plots and some type of clover, maybe mixed with rye grass, along the roads. If with rye grass it'll need to be kept mowed to about 4 inches.

We have had success with rye, peas, turnip greens and winter oats...tiller will work for small plots...

I've been planting food plots for years and all the deer do is nibble on it a little as they pass through. Last year, late in the season, I poured some Deer Cane Black Magic in the middle of my food plot in a spot that holds water longer then the rest of the area. It's worked better then I could ever imagine. They come in straight to that spot and hit it every day. I've gone from seeing a deer or two every couple of days on my cameras, to a dozen or more every night!!! There are now heavy trails going to that spot in both directions now, where before the deer cane, I would go look for tracks after it rained just to see if any deer where around. I also have a corn feeder going year round that the deer sometimes hit regularly, and sometimes just ignore. I've never seen more then four deer eating there in a given night. Two is the normal when they are eating it. Sometimes they will eat corn for weeks or more then a month, every night, then they just disappear for weeks or months at a time. I think the hogs where the biggest issue with the corn, but since fencing off the feeder to keep them out, the pattern is still the same on them eating the corn. The deer cane is what they are coming in for, and while they are there, they will eat the peas that are all around it, but mostly just in passing as they leave the area.

We hunt out of camp county in NE Texas. We planted corn but with all of the rain it isn't doing so well. We also planted lablab and cow peas and they are doing very well. The deer are all over them.

I do the deer cane every three months. I don't know if that's when it's needed or not because they are still hitting the area real good when I add more. It's really cheap and if you follow the instructions on the package about mixing it with water, you should be impressed. For what it costs, it's crazy not to give it a try.

Ok thanks eddie, ill try that as well. I think ill try winter oats/turnip for plots and rye/clover on roads and around feeder. Anyone grow alfalfa in the area and have luck with it?
