Fall Food Plot in WET Bottom - 06/12/15 04:45 PM

May be a little early, but I want to plant a polt this year.

That bottom stayed wet from November till now.

What is a good Wet land food plot ?

What's used in MN, birdsfoot trefoil, wont work in Texas it gets too hot. I'm guessing joint vetch but it's more of a swag than anything else.

I was thinking vetch too with maybe some cover mix.

I will need to check with our feed stores to see if they can get vetch.

It sure would be something that no one else is planting.

vetch is pretty pricey i believe, if you are planting a good sized plot

Well what i shred down is about five acres.

I have let the rest about 300 acres grow up.

Good cover.

Landowner has cows but they are out of there in the fall.

If anyone knows of something else that is cheaper, it will be worth a try.

you might try oats and common vetch, common vetch is about $1 a pound, oats can be pretty tolerant of moist soils.

Thst sounds pretty good.

I also read about alsike clover.

Could do a three part mix.

Anyone every plant alsike clover ?

Aeschynomene will work in wetter areas but it is expensive for large summer plots. It will need to be planted now though. For fall you might experiment with Ryegrass to see how it does. I have had limited luck with Madrid Clover in a wet spring fed drainage in the Hill Country. Planted in Sept it grew till the next July-Aug. http://www.turnerseed.com/site/springwildlifeseed.asp
