Menard towards Junction Area - thoughts?

Unfortunately, the ranch I was fixing to make an offer on south of Mason got a contract put on it. So I am back to looking. Still trying to find someplace with free range exotics - and I know there is a ton of stuff in the "hot rocks and cedar" area to choose from - but I am looking for something a little better dirt. Started to look a little further west.

There seems to be some property that fits the bill in the Menard-Fort McKavett-Roosevelt-Junction square. If I believe real estate listings, looks like decent soil, some hardwood, and has axis running around - even a few blackbuck here and there. The whitetail look a little anemic.

What are folks experiences in this area? Looking for any all information on wildlife quality and quantity.

I've hunted south west of Menard. Actually did a little guiding down that way as well. Good deer numbers and plenty of pigs. Turkey all over the place. But really the thing that grows the best down there is rocks.

I'm a fan of the Eden/concho area myself. Junction can be good west of 10 back along the llano river bottom. Same type of country We looked at in mason

Hunt east of Menard, close to the county line and given time and supplemental feeding, we're seeing some free-range bucks in the 13-150 class fairly consistently. No pigs so far and quite few axis there as well. Interested to see how this rain helps the deer this year.

My buddy just bought 800 acres slightly north of Menard and his game cameras caught a ton of blackbuck, axis, pigs, and skinny whitetails. Really a good mix.

We are south of Junction off 377. Deer have a lot of potential, axis are awesome, aoudad and blackbuck have been taken but are few and far between. In 20 years plus of having the place no other exotics have been seen. We are near water and not far from the Llano so that plays into things.

We hunted the exact area your talking about and the deer are not very good but as said before they grow some great rocks in the area!

I don't know about exotics, but that area is loaded with whitetails. Last December, we took a trip from San Antonio to San Angelo and as soon as we passed Junction and turned on Hwy 83 heading toward Menard we started seeing dead deer along the side of the road. On Hwy 83 from Junction, through Menard, to Eden, we counted 21 dead deer in that 50-mile stretch of highway.

i hunted menard area for years when younger saw lots of deer .tons doe and spikes ring tail cats few turkeys but not any running water close

I rattled up a 150+ Gross B&C buck for my wife just north of the Menard, Kimble County line a few years ago. She hit him too far back but I recovered his skull that spring. He is one of the better free ranging, no supplemental feed bucks I have seen from this area.

I've hunted eastern Kimble and northwest Kimble. I've found the deer had way better horns in the northwest part of the county.
