Anyone use hot wire rope for huge feeder pen? - 02/22/15 03:54 PM

Will deer jump a hot wire thinking of building a very large feeder pen with a solar powered charger and the hot wire rope. Going to put a big bale of alfalfa out thinking about a 80 yard x80 yard pen hoping it will be like a small food plot. Will the deer learn to jump it?

You think they'd jump it. But man one zap and they might not wanna try it again. I'd say lil risky. Let me know how it works

I fenced in a 5 acre food plot with one strand of electric fencing this past season due to the unexpected buying of some additional cows . We normally don't run cows in that pasture during deer season, but with prices being so high, we bought more in October.
At first I used the little rebar poles that come with the fencing, but the cows started jumping over it and catching the wire with their back legs and flipping the resistors and wire off the poles.
Changed all the poles out to T-Posts and T-Post resistors, and that solved the problem.
Deer never had an issue with it once they learned it was hot. They went under and over, whatever it took to get into the groceries.

Put up 2-3 wires/ropes at 20", 30" and/or 40" and the deer will go under/over it. Put corn inside and around it to get them used to it. Should be fine.

I used a t-post and electric fence for food plot last two years. Works great to keep out cows, and deer have no problem going over or under as stated above. You should be fine.

Although, the cost of a quality solar fence charger might be the same as the cost in panels for the area you are talking. If you have the charger, no biggee. Don't skimp on a quality charger.

As for deer over/under would be my guess..Friend raised hogs years ago put up E/fence that they would get zapped going under..But one hog kept getting out...We finally saw how..It would walk up and stop about 10f from fence and (start squealing and run full blast through it)guess he had to get his mind rightLOL

I put a single strand at 36" to keep the cows out, the deer always went under.Had to repair it when the antlers got caught up in the wire.
