Removing hide from skull - 01/17/15 04:10 PM
Is there an easier way to get the flesh off a skull than just cutting/scraping with a knife? I save all my antlers and have to clean up the small piece of skull that comes with them. I tried soaking in water for a few weeks and that didn't do much compared to just working on them right away.

My buddy simmers them in almost boiling water for about 6 to 8 hours. After that he washes it off with a water hose or pressure washer. You have to be careful with the pressure washer not to knock any of the teeth out. If you do you can always glue them back in. His euro mounts come out nice everytime.

Less time consuming to just do it with a knife right away.

Hah, I thought you were going to tell me to throw it in a tank full of piranha fish.
I just remembered youtube. This guy uses a knife first, then boils for 20 minutes, then scrubs with brillo and gets a good result:

Leave the skull in a pile of fireants for a couple weeks, covered with something so that varmints can't run off with it. Then boil and scrape whatever is left.
