Nice 8 pt

Nice 8 pt - 01/12/15 01:49 PM

My dad and brother got some hunting in this weekend. The rut has been pretty nonexistent and the pre season rains and current rains have everything possible for the deer to eat in great shape. Oats plot is still growing and surprisingly holding its own against heavy browse with the regular rains. Great range conditions have made the deer in general pretty elusive and the better bucks have not been seen.

This weekened the first one slipped up and my brother tagged a nice 8pt. Haven't pulled the jaw yet, but we have him estimated at 5 years old from pre season pictures. Was 170 lbs live. His right G2 and left G3 are over 10 inches for reference.

I was the hunter for the above buck....the deer were rutting hard this past Saturday. bucks I saw were chasing hard, hocks really dark. for certain the most substantial rutting activity we've seen all year. hope to be back down next weekend...should be some interesting hunting.

Skinner, I honestly don't think our deer were running till last week/ this weekend. We havent really seen any signs of rut till now. We have this deer on cam on a trail 2 weeks ago and his hocks aren't dark, they were black when he was shot.

Just help them out for next year... would be nice if the rain would keep up and we would get some when it actually counted for the horns instead of using all the rain in a bag, it gets pricy.

after I got down out of the stand to go take a look at him.....I had a 7pt chasing a doe...ran barely 10ft in front of me in the road. so close I probably coulda whacked him with a broom handle. he paused briefly to look at me and then nose back to the ground after that doe.

I've never had deer run that close to me. true crazy rutting activity.
