Dec. 21.
Morning Hunt. Yearling doe and a spike are running around the feeder at daylight. We watch them for about an hour and decide it'd be a good one for GF to shoot. About that time, he chases the doe off. 20 minutes later they are back and he's locked into her. She squeezed off the shot and nailed him at 90 yards in the shoulder (.223). He runs 30 yards and piles up.
Got this big guy that evening. Chilly and overcast, so we head out early. Around 4:30 he shows up. He's the biggest buck ever taken on our ranch body-wise. He dressed out at 180 lbs on the nose.
GF spotted him at 500 yards or so running through the woods headed our direction. Had to whistle at him to get him to stop running. He turned and faced directly at me at 85 yards. Knowing I wouldn't have much time, I put the crosshairs at the base of the neck, center mass and fired. He took off like lightning. We gave him about an hour and started to track. Went to where he was standing, no blood, hair, nothing. Looked around, no sign. Started zig-zagging in the direction he ran, nothing. I started to get nervous, mostly because my gf (who spotted him first) was there to witness the whole thing. Started frantically walking in zig-zag patterns looking for sign, but can't find any! I have never missed, and certainly wouln't miss inside 100 yards! Started thinking it's time to back out and give him more time, I spot him way off in the distance through the brush, piled up. He ran nearly 200 yards! My shot found its mark, dead center mass. Remington PSP 130gr .270.
