Heading Down to Webb/Zapata county line Tuesday for a little So.TX fun

Hoping to hook up with the 150-160" 10pt. that I turned down a 225 yard brisket shot on over Thanksgiving week. They should be running pretty good right now..Hopefully a good report back to come..

DQ Kid keep us posted on rut activity down in your area. I am heading down to the Zapata/ Starr county line next Thursday. I hope to catch a little rutting activity still happening when I get there. I was down there the first week of December and there was no activity what so ever. Due to holidays I am not able to make it back until next week. Some other guys were on the property the last 4 days and said it seemed kind of slow. This is usually prime time down there.

Well from the other end of the state in the North central panhandle area it has been really slow this year. Not one deer taken on our 6k acre place. First time in 16 years of hunting up there. Need rain bad. Good luck down South. I will be joining some good friends down there in Feb for a little hog hunting. Love it down there.

Put in 3 sittings, yesterday morning/yesterday afternoon/this morning and the weather was pretty conducive. Yesterday morning in the upper 50s, yesterday afternoon in the lower 50s with mist/rain and some wind. Rain picked up over night as did the wind with things being really mushy and wet, probably a half to inch falling, temps were in the low 40s, misting and windy. The good thing was that the weather had the deer really moving. Yesterday morning, I saw about 10 deer, one buck about 600 yards away locked down with a doe, quick view through the binocs revealed him to be a 10 pt., probably a 130-140" deer. He never got any closer. Ended up seeing a smallish 6pt. as well. Yesterday afternoon improved with 2 spikes, a nice wide, 22" or so 10pt. and another 20" or so 9pt., the 10 looked to be about a 145" and the 9 pt. a 130"; also saw a nice size boar. No indication of rutting activity from these deer. This morning in the slush was the best, close to 12 deer, 8 doe and 4 bucks. A nice 18" wide 10 pt., another wide, heavy horned short point 8pt and a very nice 4yo, high rack 10pt. that should be a flat out stud in another year or two. These deer all showed definite sign of chasing does on and off the roads a good portion of the morning. Seems that the colder temps had them maybe starting to go at it. Unfortunately, I did not see the 160" stud that I had seen over Thanksgiving but passed the shot on. My brother indicated that he saw him yesterday morning but was too far out. While driving around after yesterday's morning hunt, my brother and I saw a heavy, high horned buck, 16" or so that had stickers coming off each G2, looked to be either a 12 or 14pt. Unfortunately before we could get a rifle on him, he jumped off the road. All in all, lots of very nice bucks seen by all hunters and with today showing some great indications of the rut kicking off in full tilt. Wished my father and brothers the best of luck over the next 3 weekends.
