How many shots did it take?

I have heard this question many times and have never taken more than one shot. Nor has my wife. Yet as I sit in the stand here in east tx shots in the distance are almost always followed up with a second or third shot. Has anybody here ever hit anything on these follow up shots? Is it just an east tx thing?

On more than one occasion I have shot double hogs with a follow up shot and bolt action.

In south texas javi come to mind although I like them.

Only follow up shot I ever did on a deer I missed the second shot, but thankfully the deer never got up.

I have shot more than once on a few deer. If they move, I put another bullet in them.

I shot one of my mule deer 3 times. Guide told me to not let him get to the fence line because the neighbor was an "anti" and wouldn't let us track it. I shot him in the neck and he jumped straight up, put another behind the shoulder when he landed and another behind his shoulder when he took one step.

One of the whitetails I shot dropped in its tracks but lifted his head, so I put one in the neck.

Had a buddy gut shoot a doe out of the jeep. She ran over a small ridge and jumped when we pulled over the ridge. I put three more in her, but I was shooting my semi 30.06.

Plenty of times, I have had to use a follow up shot, especially when hunting safari style or shooting distance or running deer.

If I have the semi, the crosshairs never leave the animal until I am sure it is down. With my bolt action, the action is worked as soon as I shoot and I watch the animal through the scope until I know it is done. Any movement will result in another bullet in their direction.

I have had it happen once. Years ago on a small place near Rocksprings, I took a shot at a doe across a canyon. She was in an open spot and started to run uphill. I shot 4 more times; the last shot broke her back.
On close inspection, I hit her with every shot and ruined a lot of meat. The rifle..a 6.5 X 55 Swedish Mauser with hot handloads.
Not proud of that event but an example of what adrenaline can do in certain circumstances.

I misjudged distance in a field once. What I thought was 200 yards was more like 300 yards and there was a 20-30 mph wind that day. I'm embarrassed to admit that I had to fish around in the hunting bag for the box of bullets and reload. Amazingly enough after 2 misses at the North end of the field, the buck circled around and came out 300 yards at the South end of the field 10 minutes later. I was completely frazzled and missed again with #3. By that time, he was really looking around to see what the heck was going on, but he didn't run. I put #4 in him right in the bread basket. I could tell he was hit and wounded, but he just stood there, not moving. I had to reload and #5 in the neck dropped him on the spot. My father-in-law still loves to tell that story. He was a 6.5 yr old 10 pointer. Everyone says he was deaf or suffered from dementia to stand around and be shot at so many times. He's on my wall now.

If I hit a buck and he gives me another shot ill hit him again just incase. I made a client very unhappy when he shot a deer and he just humped up. Told him to shoot him again and he wanted to be a one shot wonder would rather let the deer suffer... that's when I pulled up and put him down..

I agree. Im a hunter and have no issue killing deer animals etc. but I do my best to make it as quick and clean a kill as possible. If something appears to have gone wrong or they just stand their I will likely shoot again.

Some good stories here that give me a better understanding. Especially the buck with dementia. Lol. I guess Ive always hunted where it's so thick that if they're not down at the shot then they are out of sight immediately. Definitely understand with pigs. Aoudad as well. We put 10 shots between two of us into a running herd in del rio once. Ranch manager said we were obligated to kill as many as possible. They were considered pest on his ranch 15 years ago. Now they're a big selling exotic.

I've gotten 22 rounds off at a group of hogs in ETX and 3 out of a bolt action bc that's all I have in the rifle. No telling how many hits out of 22, but was hearing a thud with most of them and 3/3 with bolt action. All in the pines of deep east tx. My neighbor does the 3 shot volley, I hear the first one hit, but usually not the rest.

I will certainly take multiple shots on a deer if needed. Where I hunt I have some areas where deer could jump a fence if they run a bit after hit, so we try to put one in the shoulder to prevent that and then if they are still hobbling I will put them out of their misery with a kill shot. Have only done that once on my son's first doe he shot, but it is still a possibility every time we sit that stand. Most of the deer we have shot we see crumble up, so that makes it easy, but I have laid several shots into moving coyotes or hogs or whatever, just trying to put the hurt on as many as I can or just trying to connect on a 200+ yard moving coyote using barbed wire fence as my rest

When I was a teenager I shot a deer at 400 yards resting on barbed wire took me 4 shots and then I just wounded him. I was just an excited kid and would never do that today. Im assuming most of those multi shots I hear are hogs.

When I am guiding hunts; after a shot I will tell them to load another round and keep the gun in the window. I learned this after a beginner got nervous and gut shot a doe. When the doe dropped he got cocky and put the gun in the corner of the blind, I had to put another shot in the doe when it stood up to walk away.
I have learned that this is a pretty good practice for anyone.

The amount of stands is greatness

Yes, when trying to hit as many hogs as possible that show up in a group at a feeder.

I've seen that video several times, and I've never noticed how any stand there are. That's funny.

I've had to shoot one whitetail twice. hit him in a field and he ran off and I shot him again as he stood on the edge. both shots were kill shots but I wasn't going to take any chances.
