Panhandle cull

Panhandle cull - 11/28/14 12:17 AM

Took this old 3x3 mule deer last night in the Panhandle. Needed to thin some of these old guys out and this was a perfect candidate. Besides, he gave me a perfect broadside at around 120. Going to be some fine eating, he was rolling fat. Another notch for the 700 AAC 308

Came across this guy sunning in the dunes last Saturday. He got over his mad pretty quick

Is that a western rattler? I've seen a lot of diamondbacks but never one like that.

Left the bug for the hawks, it's a prairie rattler.

Any snake experts here. Got to looking closer at this snake and comparing photos, sure looks like a Mojave. I knew they were moving slowly east and had one confirmed in Howard Co back in 2002 by a veterinarian. This was in Lamb Co.

I think is what you thought originally, based on the thinner bandwidth on its back.

Sure looks like a Mohave to me. Much worse than a Diamondback and you better know the difference if you get bit b/c anti venom for a Diamondback won't help you at all if you're bit by a Mohave. Two different kinds of venom.

Prairie rattler...That one is a trophy. I've never seen one that big before.

Great deer BTW. I might have to recant my prairie rattler statement. PR's usually look more like the pattern of a copperhead. Mojave rattler? I don't know...We're a long way from the Mojave desert though, sooooo confused2

Mojave snakes are in SE New Mex and West Texas. I got in to one when working N of Van Horn back in the 80's. This one acted like a Mojave, real bad attitude before I ever got near him. Wish I had looked at his head better. Look at his patterns compared to other pics. They may be following the sand dunes. I know Mojaves are bad little dudes with their venom.

Prairie rattlesnake. That light color phase is common in the panhandle.
