G1 lengh

G1 lengh - 10/29/14 07:12 PM

I assume it is genetic like most characteristics? There are a few on our lease that have little or none basically. We are in a record drought and one is very young but the other is close to being mature. Could the drought affect it that much while not affecting other growth?

Dry weather don't help but I cull for no or short brows. IF! a buck that don't have brows by 2 does get them later, they usually are a lot shorter than bucks that start with them.

Here is one of the more mature ones. He has a lot of mass for the conditions but barely any G1 length.

Here is the other he is a bit younger but has the same characteristics and I'm wondering if he will gain any next year. He obviously is lacking in the mass and length the other deer has but is lacking in the g1 area as well.

You sure those aren't the same deer?

Not as bad as I was expecting, like no brow at all, but still not great. Brows will get length with age, I wouldn't expect either of those to ever reach 5-6", but anything's possible. Brow tines are one way I track different bucks. They never seem to change a whole lot shape wise year to year.

I cant count 10 points from either of those pics.

IME browtines length, shape and starting place on the mainbeam are genetic. They will get longer with age and can be a good indicator of age when they are longer. Some areas in the state just have very short browtines. There are pockets in Webb County that will have mature bucks with 1" or so browtines and areas in La Salle County can have pockets of really great browtines. I don't think the buck in the top pic is more than a middle age buck, a 3 yr old. The second pic appears to be the same buck as the first pic to me, but he looks to be a 4 yr old from the way he is standing.

Pic 1 looks to have more curl in the g3 then pic two does but it could just be the angle. Yall maybe right.

We need more pics

Here is another good pick of the bottom one.

The only other pick that I think is the top you can barely see the right side with his head down.

I see 9 points on both of them only. The buck in the bottom pic has a curl in that mainbeam out at the end and that is what the top buck appears to have instead of G4. 2cents

That is what I see as well.

Yep, I think the way the right side at the tip of the main beam points up a bit makes me think its a G4 I believe y'all are right.

I just went through this with our place. We were counting bucks from our trail camera surveys. Dad counted 26 different bucks. I counted 17. Different angles make them look very different at times.

Re: G1 lengh - 10/29/14 08:01 PM

Might be. This is the only other picture I have of what looks like the top one to me.

Either way I think both are pretty young but was curious about brow length. We have some that are 2.5yr old with much longer length already than these/this deer.

Re: G1 lengh - 10/29/14 08:10 PM

Posted this on another post.

Last year we had 3 big 6 pts with no brow tines. We shot one of them, never saw the other two. This year one is still a no brow 6pt but considerably bigger than last year the other is a hi tight 8 pt with shortish brows. The 6 will get shot this year providing we see him the 8 will likely get a pass till next time. I believe both are 3 this year.

Well both deer have been seen in person. The 10 I saw and he is nice but has a very small body. I almost would say a 2yr body but the headgear would be more like a 3yr. The 9 is a bit bigger in body size but the horns are almost identical. Hopefully they get through to next year.
