Your Biggest WT - 11/17/13 02:22 PM
So chime in. We want to know what your 3 BEST ever TEXAS deer have been. Scores and pics would be nice. I'm curious. Mine is a 116, yep that's it. Nothing bigger. I will do a mule deer thread as well as we progress. No bashing, bragging is appreciated though. Please share. If you have no pics not a problem. Place the score, yr, county and how it was harvested. ok go................

Re: Your Biggest WT - 11/17/13 02:49 PM
I have hunted more here in fort ben county than anywhere else. I dont have pics on my phone, but my three best were all between 105" and 118". All between 8 and 10 points. I have been on that lease for 12-13 years on my own, and I am 28. To be honest i think i have killed the highest scoring deer to my knowledge. Have not killed a buck in the last 3 years because i am wanting bigger than I have and havent seen one yet in person.

Re: Your Biggest WT - 11/17/13 02:54 PM
163 6/8 is my biggest I've had scored. Shot a high-fence cull that may be bigger, but more proud of that low fence deer. I've shot 4 low-fence bucks over 130. Biggest off our family property is 138. Have one that would beat that running around. Saw him this morning in fact, but not within range.

my first and also biggest, eastland county in 1993 i believe, 8pt with a little knuckle on the left MB out towards the end, probably scored about 115", taken at 110 yards with my marlin 3030.
the only pic is an old polaroid and i have no idea where it is. about 12 years ago i gave the antlers to a little kid that lived down the road when he moved away, kind of regret that lol.

Re: Your Biggest WT - 11/17/13 03:23 PM
I have four that all score right around 120, with one being a little over that. He would have been about 135, but he broke off one of his best tines.

Re: Your Biggest WT - 11/17/13 03:43 PM
I killed my first nice buck when I was 13 back in 1994. It was a nice 8pt from Nolan county. I was lucky to have a cousin and uncle that got permission to take me hunting a few times.
After about an 18 year hiatus I was able to get on my first deer lease and after a long season took a nice 8 pt on the 2nd to last weekend.
This year on opening morning I was able to take my best buck to date and ended up being the first buck I ever got a picture of on the lease. I hunt in Coke county so I don't expect to shoot any Monsters but am happy with the quality we do have.

Wow is right! That's a dandy. In my experience, mounts of really big bucks need to be seen in person to really appreciate them. My brother in the Midwest has a 170 and a 162 on his wall and when you walk into the room it nearly takes your breath away.
BTW, great thread. I sure like seeing nice bucks!

Re: Your Biggest WT - 11/19/13 01:08 AM
On the wall now, my best is 161 5/8", followed by a 159 and a 149. But in Saskatchewan last year I got lucky on a buck that we green-netted at over 179. I left it with a Canadian taxidermist before the 60-day drying period had elapsed.
I should be getting my mount back in the next two weeks. I hope when I re-score him, he will still qualify for B&C all time. He would be my 7th B&C book animal, if he makes the cut.

These are from South Dakota, but they are my two biggest which happened to be by bow. Non-residents cannot buy a gun license there and there's no lottery option so I was 'forced' into bow hunting if I wanted to hunt the tree rows around the farm. No complaints here!
I'm guessing around 125" each?
Never had access to or the money for "Monster" bucks...but I hunt hard for what I get. Love this thread...keep it going!
No Monster, never had him scored...but my best after over 30 years of hunting.(2012 Season, Limestone County)

No.1 rule of hunting is to hunt where the big deer live.
you can't kill what isn't there.
I know guys who have been killing big deer on leases since they were kids because they hunted in good areas.
A lot of whats involved in killing big deer is location, location, location
going to a ranch and paying for a hunt and shooting a big deer isn't any different from going to Colorado and shooting a big elk or to Canada and shooting a big deer or going to Africa and shooting a big kudu.
my buddy hunts in Canada, they went up their year before last and he shot a 165" and his dad shot a 185". both true wilderness 100% as fair chase as fair chase gets, if their is such a thing.
Do those deer mean less than someone elses buck because it was a paid hunt instead of a paid lease?

If you're referring to me since I listed three huge whitetails, you couldn't be more wrong. I've been deer hunting for 48 years. I've hunted public lands, private lands, low and high-fence. If I'm in an area where a 130 is a trophy and I get one, I'd be just as happy as the biggest deer I ever killed. See, some of us measure our success not by score, but by the experience. Friendships and memories made. Lessons learned. And most of all for me, it's where I'm closest to Him.
That I have the ability to afford to hunt a few big deer each year that are giant, makes me no more nor less a HUNTER than you. I'm plenty comfortable in my own skin and don't need to stroke my ego.
I hunt because I love the outdoors. I hunt because I like to eat venison. And I hunt for the chance at a trophy. Just because I've killed some giant whitetails doesn't mean they were tied to a tree.

its just jealousy for the most part.
the guy driving the Toyota corolla gets mad at the guy driving the Vette', the guy driving the ranger downplays the guy that is driving the king ranch diesel.
I don't hear bass fisherman dogging the guys that fly into mexico to catch these giant bass, where they have days where they catch 2 or 3 double digit fish, yet its common that a hunter will dog another hunter if they kill a deer that was on a paid package hunt.

I'm rockin' an extremely impressive 128 8-pt as my biggest kill.
I do not follow txtrophy85's rule, typically. i.e. I hunt where there ain't [censored] but tiny bucks. Thought I might finally break that trend this year, but alas, my buck swam the creek and it out of my reach now.
Hope his brother shows up or something.

Exactly, location is the #1 factor in what kind of buck you can expect to take. Obviously everyone would like to take a Booner but we've got to be realistic.
Where I hunt any whitetail over 130" is a dandy and I've been lucky enough to take a couple nice bucks over the years.
Is it wrong of someone to go hunt on a HF ranch in South Texas and take a monster buck relatively easily? No and not only because it's within the legal limits of the law. For all we know that same person may have hunted his whole life and never even seen a nice buck, let alone taken one.
Instead of judging one another we should just be happy with the fact that we're all able to experience the outdoors in the first place. Regardless if the mature buck in your area is 120" or 180" just enjoy the pursuit and the thrill of the hunt. You'll be glad you did!

I'm sick of how in all your posts you "assume" that everyone that's not from a big city and doesn't pay to let someone guide them and tell them exactly when too shoot a deer on a HF ranch is poor and lives in a trailer house, you could not be more wrong sir I don't PAY to LEASE anywhere my family owns more land than I could ever possibly hunt in a season, and by the way I don't own a ranger either but it would be about your size of truck

Re: Your Biggest WT - 11/19/13 10:54 PM
I think his analogy has less to do with wealth, and more to do with value (what someone is willing to pay). I have the money to hunt with outfitters, and prefer to do that, but I wouldn't mind having your problem of being land wealthy (even if it is family land). Life is too short, and you can't take the money with you. Might as well spend it as you choose.

I really like this thread most folks on here hunt their whole life and finally get that 130-140 class deer and are the proudest hunters in the world after all the work they put in to get him, and then on the other hand you have a few that you can tell just stroked a check and smiled for the camera
I think you took something the wrong way.

How does a thread about show your best deer turn into a battle between classes, money, etc. Best advice ever? To each his own.
I have hunted hill country and been proud to kill a 130 inch buck. I have hunted high fence and proud to kill an awesome buck. I have hunted South Texas low fence and blessed to kill a 200 inch deer after years of hard work.
If someone chooses to hunt high fence, low fence, high price, no price - it is America and we are blessed with the freedom to CHOOSE. So how about continuing with the great pictures on this thread so far from all walks of life and in diverse ways and each of us enjoy someone else's success?

it always turns into a battle/argument.
and the guys that have killed the bigger deer are never the first to start fighting, its the other way around, always saying stuff like "you can tell who just stroked a check and smiled for the camera"
some real nice deer in this thread though

I don't care to be around guys like that. Most the friends I have could drive a king ranch and pay for sit and shoot hunts for 200+ inch deer but don't care to. Myself included.

Looks like a 131 to me. So many scores on the Internet, whether guessed or measured, are inflated so bad that when someone actually scores it right, people think it's been shorted.

Never had the opportunity to shoot a buck growing up. Now that I have two boys, it's all about getting them a nice one 1st, then maybe dad can go after one. This is the 10 point my oldest son got last year. Hopefully one day I will be able to put his younger brother on one comparable.

Heck, just measure it and see what it is. People make it out to be rocket science but it's very straight forward to get a gross score.

Last Thursday in Viking, Alberta. 10 pt that weighed 250 lbs and measured 148 5/8. The outfitter, a guide and a taxidermist measured him but I don't think he is quite that large. I believe 145-146 is closer.

without the 2 extra pionts the drop tine and the 10 inch browtines that deer probably wouldnt make it to 120. With all the goodies I would believe the score you posted. Those brows are like extra points! Awsome deer

Thanks Ranchman. I don't have any handy but will try and get some. I got him in '06 and hadn't looked at mounts much and just thought I had to have him in an upright pose like he was "the boss". Everybody tried to talk me out of it but I wouldn't listen, even the taxidermist. He did a fantastic job but it is a very simple, straight forward pose. Wish I would have had him offset, turned, semi-sneak, something but oh well. Live and learn.

May seem strange to some but this is one of my most memorable bucks... watched him all through rut because he stayed in a no go zone near the boss mans house....he injured 2 nice young 10 points that I know of... one really bad. He was also one of the biggest deer iv ever seen on the hoof during rut but had lost a lot of weight when I got him... got a go ahead on him for one afternoon only in late January (MLD) and just happened to work out. 21 wide 5yr old 7pnt.

Years ago in late 70's, early 80's my neighbor and I worked some and hunted the Rafter S in Batesville for Mary Nan West. He carried a friend who did the Armadillo Commercial ect and PR for Lone Star Brewery. Bill had lost his wife to Cancer recently. Virgil put him on a free range low fence Buck that was 15 points, 30" wide and 15" high. Bill shot him with a 270 and old factory ammo, bullet popped on his shoulder and the buck ran. Virgil shot him off hand with Bills sons 243 in the back of the head over 400 yds away. Christmas Day Virgil gave Bill the mount as a Xmas gift. Bill was just going to put the horns on a board!

MY MULIE
Growing up in a small town up in the Rolling Plains back in the sixties was not exactly a deer hunters haven, My grandfather had property up in Dickens County which at the time was wonderful for hunting blue quail but never a set of horns except on his cattle. This property is still a wonderful getaway and hunting destination for our family and friends and has a lot to do with my story. In the early seventies a few whitetail were released by the Texas Parks and Wildlife up in this area and after a few years we finally started seeing the deer population increase slowly but surely. While up hunting whitetail one weekend, back in 1985, I was invited to hunt on a friends place in Cottle County outside Paducah. He had told me there were not a lot of whitetail around but I may see a mule deer. Seeing a mule deer for the first time was very different and I could not believe how odd it was to see a deer hop instead of just seeing the buff on a whitetail heading for the nearest cover. These were the first mule deer I had ever laid eyes on and it was on this trip I managed to take a spike off my friend’s property. After this I always wondered what a thrill it would be to harvest a trophy mule deer and this would stay with me for quite some time. Well, I went on a dry spell for a number of years only hunting a few times for mulies up in that area with no luck. Hunting the panhandle has always produced a lot of memories and it was in 2005 I had the great privilege of hunting on a friend’s ranch in Gray County. On our first trip I thought this had to be one of the most beautiful places I had ever been on with deep rugged canyons, large cottonwoods, tall grass and thick plum thickets. It was that year while on a whitetail hunt, after mule deer season had just wrapped up in mid-December, I was sitting on a bluff enjoying a beautiful sunrise when a group of several mulies crossed a ravine only 100 yards from where I sat. They were all large bodies with tall wide antlers and had to be mature trophies from what knowledge I had about mule deer then. After this encounter I was really looking forward to future hunts on this beautiful ranch. My friend let me continue hunting the ranch and then here comes the big fire of 2006. It brutally took its anger on many large ranches in the area and I thought it would take years to recover and would never be the same. I was extremely wrong. The ranch lost some beautiful cottonwoods and was scorched dearly but after a couple years of good fall and spring rains things were starting to come back little by little. It did scatter the deer population but over the next several years I returned during each season only seeing a few mule deer which were in need of growing up a little. In 2010 I had my chance on a nice mature 4x4 but the time must just not of been for me that season. Always check your ammo and make sure it is not out of date or gone bad! This next year was one of the worst draughts I have witnessed growing up in Texas. We had over seventy days of 100-degree weather and hardly any rainfall at all. During the fall I was at a benefit for the Ridley Sea Turtle which is put on by a friend who works with the Texas Parks and Wildlife. I had been eying a shoulder mount on the silent auction and ended up as the lucky winner which you will hear of again later in the story. Well, although I had the mount it had to be used within the year and I was not to very sure if there would be a chance for this because of the terrible draught conditions we had been encountering the past few years. Oh well, for a good cause! When deer season came around and the mule deer season was coming to an end a few months later, my friend, who owns the ranch up in Gray County, met up with me to hunt some whitetail on my farm in Dickens County. Because of the terrible draught we decided not to take any of the whitetail we were seeing off the property this trip so we loaded up and made the other 100 miles north to the ranch up in Gray County hoping for a little better results. Although they had received a little more rain than other parts of the panhandle, and I had since been back several times, it was still not the beautiful ranch I remembered from my first trip. We pulled through the gate of the ranch about two o’clock in the afternoon and did not take any time in getting the Polaris off the trailer and riding one of the larger pastures. To our surprise we were seeing quite a few nice whitetail bucks. The following morning bright and early we hit another one of the larger pastures and began what we thought would be a wonderful day of not working and hopefully some good hunting. It was a very cool morning and could not be any better than hunting with good company along nothing but miles of nature with deep canyons and open bluffs. While enjoying the beauty and still an eye open for the reason there I just happened to see a patch of white, reflecting off the morning sun, on the east side of a ravine. I quickly told my friend to stop and turn off the Polaris. After a few moments, rubbing my watering eyes from the cold wind, it looked to be a very nice mature mulie getting some morning sun out of the cold breeze. My friend scoped the small ledge on the ravine and said it looked to be a good one and if I was going to take a mulie this would be my chance. I was hunting with my Remington model 788 .308 and it has been a very good gun to me for the past thirty years. It was only about a 165 yard shot across the ravine and seemed like only seconds for the squeeze of my trigger finger and a good shot. It was not until after the long ride in the Polaris, which seemed like hours, to the far side of the ravine I finally knew exactly what a magnificent animal he was. Completely in aw here I was standing over the mule deer of my dreams and the most proud hunter you could ever imagine. This had to be one of the most intense and wonderful times a hunter could ever go through. Even a few tears! I was not hesitant in making a call to my wife and bragging a little bit and will now remember this moment forever. He weighed in at over 275 lbs-5x5-7 years old and grossed 182 inches with a net score of 178 ¾. He is number 1 in the panhandle region and number 2 in state for typical mule deer. I still cannot brag on him enough and so thankful for the opportunity of sharing it with a special friend. I had a really good feeling that the money for my shoulder mount would go for a good cause and used wisely, both for the Ridley Sea Turtle and myself. What a wonderful 60th birthday present and he is forever on my wall and will be admired by family and friends for years to come.

Re: Your Biggest WT - 11/24/13 08:31 PM
MY WHITETAIL
It was in 1995, on this beautiful piece of Texas that I scored my first trophy whitetail and will forever be a special and wonderful moment in my lifetime. The winter had been a little cooler than usual that year and a little more rain than normal for this part of the Texas Panhandle. Not having the opportunity to make the normal seasonal trips as usual I was there with a good friend for the final weekend of deer season for a little relaxation and in hope of a little venison for our freezers. Enjoying the outdoors and cool weather we were not seeing any mature bucks and doe were still off limits for this county. It was on that Sunday morning I thought I would give it that one last try even though it was cold, windy and my buddy decided to sleep in. After a very cold sunrise and with my toes not having too much feeling left, the sounds coming from the cabin were telling me my friend was up and I made the decision to give it up and head back for a hot cup of coffee and start packing for the trip back home. With two steps already down the ladder from the blind I saw a glimpse or shadow over my right shoulder at about 150 yards. A second sighting was a group of four bucks popping over the back fence and out into the open prairie. I almost crashed and burned trying to get back up the ladder and knew it was either now or never for this last outing to come out successful. I only had 3 of my Sierra boat tail 165 grain bullets and knew the odds would be thin with all four of the bucks in full run. They turned to the left behind me and again were all topping a dividing fence at about 150 yards. I could tell the slow guy had to be the oldest but all were wide and thick horned. As he lagged behind my first shot was over his head, chamber another round, and a miss behind his back foot. At this time he was in full stride and topping the cross fence behind the others and I knew this last shot had to count. Careful aim, lead and Wham…in midair he crashed to the ground as the others were up and away. I began to wonder as I could not see anything walking out to where he went down for the bluestem grass was very tall this year. It was then the tip of his horns appeared glistening over the tall grass and I could see a shadow of his large frame. I was shaking and very cautious as I walked up to see for the first time a truly magnificent whitetail trophy which would score 140 inches and make the Texas Big Game Award for the 95-96 season of that region. I Finally Did It! Needless to say, my friend was thrilled when I got back with my trophy and a little disappointed as I told him there were plenty to go around and maybe on his next hunt he will remember the old saying “the early bird gets the worm”.
128" pope and young big heavy tall eight point when I was 17 I really havnt shot a buck since other than spikes just havnt seen anything that would top him now I do have a 135-140 8 on cam but he is nocturnal been hunting him hard all season helpfully I can connect

after seeing all the monsters you've harvested, I truly appreciate you asking. And I'll honestly tell you I'm not sure man. When I killed him, a dude I worked with called him mid 130's, Not sure though, but this dudes my pride and freakin joy. Perhaps my buck of a lifetime. Not sure I can top that on my small property, with all the pressure and everybody shooting everything that's brown. But I digress, I pulled the shot and gut shot that deer, searched for hours, ended up pushing him. Twice. That was my bad, X2, for gut shooting him, then for pushing him. I found him well after the 24 hour mark, but was a warm day/night. I tried to cape my first WT stiff as a board by myself, and didn't turn out so well, had to get a cape from the taxidermist. Got this on my dads property, who's since passed, but he helped me find this buck, by telling me where to go look, before I left to go home.
I'll let you know ...

Not real big but my biggest. Shot it in Tennessee 2 years ago, but still a lot of years to get my biggest.
I was hunting with both of my boys who decided to take a nap during the evening hunt when this Panhandle bruiser made an appearance. My oldest son would have been the trigger man had he been awake. They didn't even wake up when the gun went off. Ended up being my biggest whitetail in 30+ years of hunting. It had a gross score of 161 and some change, and just a tad bit under 40in of mass.
