How to...find a new lease?

How to...find a new lease? - 01/29/13 03:08 AM

In the market for a new deer lease.

What steps should I take? Lease broker? Want ads? Chamber of Commerce offices?

Any suggestions? Seems a little overwhelming to find a new spot, I've got to admit. hammer

All of the above and also spend a day or a weekend in the closest town to the county/area you are wanting to hunt in. Talk to the local feed & seed stores personnel, chamber of commerce and basically anyone else you can to seek out a lease opportunity. You'll be shocked how some face to face conversation still goes a long way with some..

Post an ad on Craigslist stating what you are looking for. I know there is a lot of spam but I found my lease that way.

Go to, or call city halls of the city/county you want to hunt in and ask them if they know of, or have anything available.

Open a classified ad in major newspapers (FW and Dallas newspaper). I did this when I was looking and had 4-5 hits but I already found a lease.

Good luck in your search

We may not renew our current lease(being priced out) but the thought of going through all of that again is painful. We got ripped off big-time one year.

Casually mention it to all of your co-workers and neighbors. No telling who might have an opening....

I've had the best luck at the feed stores in the area where I wanted to hunt...The ranchers buy their feed there, usually high school kids working there that could use extra cash. Believe me they will ask every rancher about a hunting lease if they can make $100 bucks from you!!!

Sounds like a good idea for someone looking for a lease.

I would suggest trying all the above! I am a moderator on Deer Texas.com and can tell you that for the past 30 days, lease listing activity has been rather slow and that what is currently being listed is mostly large west Texas leases that are looking for hunters right now!

Usually, lease listings start picking up in March and particularly after turkey season is nearly over in late April or May! But, establish your sources and keep looking! GOOD LUCK!
