Cheap way to coon proof your feeders - 06/08/11 06:13 PM

Working well for me so far.
Bought some 20" wide roof flashing from Home Depot.
Cut 18" lengths and wrapped them around the legs shaped as cones.
Secure them with self tapping screws and you're good to go.

I bet they also work nicely as a dinner bell when the feeder goes off. grin

That is definitely a bonus, it does add some noise when they go off.
Plus, with a little imagination, you can bend the edges up and it looks like you have the Flying Nun's hat on the poles.

Two thumbs up on this one. Dang coons are out of control in Kansas where I hunt. We rarely use timed feeders in Kansas but I have fed many coons in Texas as well. I have heard that Purina Monkey Chow will make the coons go away as well.
Great Idea!!!

Another idea, and I have actually seen this sold foir this purpose but you can make yourself. Cut three pieces of 4" PVC about 18" long. Cut three pieces of "dog chain" (length to be determined) and attach one end to the end of each piece of PVC. Slip one piece onto each feeder leg with the chain up. Attach the other end of the chain to the bottom of the feeder barrel with a self tapping screw so that the bottom of the PVC hangs below the bottom of the spinner motor. When a coon climbs your feeder leg and gets to the PVC, they will try to continue on over the PVC. Because the PVC is hanging loose it will flop around and they will fall off.

I just put cooking grease on the poles. After 3 months, put more on. I don't get pictures of coons on my feeders anymore.

u can use the spin tech or the eliminator spin plates. Easier for me, and they last.

put some grease on those things and I believe the coons would look for easier pickens.

I like it too.

I use tractor grease and add cayenne pepper to it. The pepper keeps them away longer as they don't like it when they lick their paws to get it off.

Just don't inhale or sneeze!!!

How long does that last and does that effect the deer

I don't think longevity will be a problem.
Galvanized metal should stand up to the elements for years.
I've only had these up for a few weeks now, but I think they will hold up fine.
After setting up a trail camera to check on their success, what I found was these work GREAT at squirrel proofing your feeders.
By looking at the pictures below, I have come to the conclusion that the large end of the funnel needs to be enlarged and I am also going to try the grease and cayenne pepper on the next group.
I'm contemplating changing the cage design as well.
How a full grown coon can get through 1"X2" wire is beyond me.
It does however appear to give him a nice place to sit.

They don't work either... Get a box full of .22lr and sit out there all night

If there is a way to get rid of coons that would be nice. A old man told me not to long ago is "the only thing you can do with coons is get used to feeding them" haha

As stated above...axle grease/cayenne pepper works GREAT! Been doin it for years and ZERO coon problems crawling up feeder legs and we have more than our share of coons. The smell does'nt bother the deer at all.

Also a bowl of fly bait and Dr. Pepper set in a tree nearby...they eat it and run off and dont come back...
