Clairemont/Jayton Deer Hunting - 03/01/11 01:37 AM

I looked at a lease between Clairemont and Jayton this past weekend and saw good signs of dominant bucks. Can anyone tell me more about the deer in this area?? Thanks in advance

Hunted 6 miles north and east of Jayton in the late 90's and there were some good bucks in the red wash country there. Hard to hunt them since there was not many deer. Winter wheat was a good start to look for them. Rut on the Jayton area was just before Thanksgiving by about a week or 10 days and farther east about 5 miles it was about a week earlier than that, so around 14 to 20 days earlier than Thanksgiving. They would come to rattling there pretty good on that ranch. Poaching was a major problem back then.

i used to hunt just north of clairmont on the salt fork of the brazos. they also had a little spot farther north-east of there on duck creek. me and my dad took some real nice bucks off of that place. the deer were not very thick, but there were sure some nice ones. awesome dove and quail hunting place also.

Great hunting for big Deer, lots of rattling excitement,Once the rut is over they are tough to hunt.I also hunted the salt fork back in the 90s, not many deer back then, lots of deer on that same ranch today. We paid 2dollars an acre for 10,000 acre pasture, ten guys.WHAT A DEAL IT WAS!all whitetails, mulies are south on double mt.fk and northeast of Jayton on croton creek breaks, absolutely loved that country just got priced-out.

I managed a ranch out there, and I can say that the numbers are not very high. The quality was amazing. We had 28 sections and only took 5 bucks a year. 2 of the biggest bucks I have ever seen, I saw riding a canyon out looking for 3 heifers, stood up and just walked off like they had never seen me.
