Coryell county

Is there anyone doing any hunting in Coryell county this season? Just asking cause this will be the first year out there for me. In the past I did most of my hunting in Walker/Houston counties so I'm no stranger to having to work for my deer, but what I am wondering is how is the population out there never hunted that far west so I got no clue.

I've never hunted that county specifically but knowing people who have your numbers should be quite a bit higher than Walker and Houston Counties IMO.

yeah its tough but that's half the fun for me hunting back home(south east Texas) or at least it was when I was younger. I highly doubt I'll do nearly as much stalking/ground blind hunting as I once did and I did notice a lot of deer moving around but isn't that every where they are thick as fleas on a dog till about 3 days before season starts lol

Where in coryell county?

A couple years ago there was a 174 B&C killed in Hamilton county but near the western border of coryell county

Near Gatesville a little place called Pedcoke

I hunt Coryell County near Topsey. We don't see many monsters, but do see decent numbers with a nice, mature shooter buck thrown in the mix from time to time. Big bucks are around and seen, just not that often from the stand.

That's good to hear I never been a Horn hunter myself and some times I'd almost rather get a big doe over a small bodied buck with a decent set of antlers, not saying I wouldn't mind getting a big boy for the wall but I was mostly wondering about the numbers in the area

We hunt near Northern Coryell County on the Leon River. We see a lot of deer. Had a bid deer killed on the next lease over 2 seasons ago. We love it. Location and price are right

nice I'm pretty excited to get to try this place out this season I haven't got to do too much hunting in the last 9 or so years a few days a year is all i have had cause I was living in Hawaii wont get to do too much scouting this year (by my standards) cause im in Iraq till July and I normally like to get out and poke around starting in may but 5ish months should be ok, and the best part about this lease is all i got to do is fix fences and stuff like that it just costs me sweat lol

The Leon River is golden hunting....ive hunted up and down the same river just 2 counties west with similar results to what you describe

I wont be hunting that far from you. We are hunting off of 116 before you get to Pidcoke from Gville. Our place is rt across from Ft Hood. This will be my 1st year on that place but I know there are a lot of deer in that area. I saw an absolute monster 2 years ago that crossed the road in front of me in Pidcoke. He had to have been every bit of 170" and of course he was going on to Ft Hood property. Lots and Lots of deer in that area and there are some good ones if you are lucky enough to see one.

Yep, I've got two places leased on the Leon. One just south of Gatesville and the other about 7 or 8 miles north. I saw 3 legal (13 inch AR) bucks last year during bow season, but passed on all of them due to lack of age. I typically see anywhere from 2 or 3 up to as many as 20 does on a good hunt. Most days I'll see some type of buck, but not a lot of really big ones. I've got a 22 inch wide 8 point that I killed near Pearl back in the 70's when I was a teenager, but usually a 17 or 18 inch wide 10 point classifies as a big buck for that county.

Ive been hunting my whole life about 2 miles off the Leon on a creek that runs into the Leon on the Hamilton/Comanche county line....seen as many as 45 deer an afternoon, 6 bucks at a time with the smallest bein an 8pt, etc, etc. Yep 17-18" wide is big, but ive killed a 14 inch wide buck that grossed 133"

man you guys got me hyped up to get home and get to it back where I am from over by Huntsville your lucky if you see 1 buck a season and the most I ever remember seeing together at one time is 3 total and that was a doe and 2 yearlings

45 deer? Geez. I was crapping all over myself with 17 in an afternoon last year. I generally see 5 or 6 deer each sit. Beats Newton County with a deer every 2 or 3 seasons.

does anyone hunt south of evant and or south of beehouse in coryell county ? just picked up a lease there thats never been hunted. its the first time we have hunted that county

your going to love the area, I hunted off 580 for years, there are some nice bucks in the area. I'm now up the road east of evant and loving life

Depends where your at in the county, there are some parts of the county where the hogs are pushing the deer out like around pancake and turnersville. Around pidcoke probably will have a better population of deer than the northeast part of the county, and it doesn't hurt being close to fort hood, LOTS of deer in there. Don't expect big bodied deer, they tend to be really small in that area. Have heard of some absolute honey holes around walker/houston county in the national forest, private land sound to be tough or the locals are just keeping quiet.
