UTV Rental Business

Kicking around the idea of starting a UTV rental business, just not sure that the market is there, so figured I'd ask here if anyone has rented them in the past and if you would in the future. Looking to stay away from mud park rentals and beach rentals and focus more on hunting lease / outfitter rentals. I know there have been times at our lease when family comes out and having a second UTV for a long weekend would have been nice.

Thoughts? Has anyone successfully rented their UTV when not in use or have any connections to a rental company?

Very expensive venture with very little demand.

You’re not in an area with tons of riding places, therefore the tourism aspect of rentals isn’t there. Most UTV rental places I have priced out are $500+ per day and that doesn’t include delivery.

not diverse enough. Almost every equipment rental company rents SxS’s, the cater to a larger sub set of users.

Liability would be a nightmare. And as said in above post; you’re not in a great spot for recreation. Now NM or Colorado is a different story.

Thanks for the feedback, it's what I figured.

I bet every renter would know how to tie them down when transporting to and from. In addition, i bet none of them would ever abuse the equipment.

I rented travel trailers out for about 4 years. I made a TON of "mailbox money." I had a broker that took care of all the repairs, rentals & related issues. Something to consider, when renters would become aggravated with the trailer for whatever reason, they would simply leave the trailer where it was and go about their way. Several times I had to drive to retrieve the trailer not even knowing if it would be towable. Retrievals took me to Amarillo, Lubbock, lake Sam Rayburn, etc.. Some people would demand I bring them another trailer.......once, to Garner State Park. That's 5 hours one way. I demanded credit card payment as I could back charge any extra expenses. There were lawsuits over that more often than not. So, your contract would have to be bulletproof.

The amount of profit is in direct proportion to the risk. When things were running right, I just got a check monthly. When things went wrong it created more of a burden on me than I could deal with given the fact I was trying to hold down a full-time job too. I am not trying to dissuade you.

Example 1:
John Doe comes to inquire of a trailer rental. I told him, you go buy a new trailer, bring it to me for rental & we'll both make money. He did so. I rented it out for $1000 weekly. I kept $500 & sent him a check for $500.

New trailers rented quickly. Once they got to be a couple of years sold, not so quickly.

Example 2:
john Doe comes to inquire of a trailer rental. His house has burned to the ground & he is going to need immediate residence until his house is rebuilt. He rents the trailer for the duration. That was usually a minimum of 12 months. A couple of times it stretched into two years. That equals a monthly check that carried the owner of the trailer thru an otherwise down time due to seasonal usage.

There is money to be made for sure. In the Houston area, your rigs would return rode hard & put up wet. Most likely having been in the mud parks. Location is a main facet for sure. Seasons will also dip into your income. Insurance? Sky is the limit I would imagine. You just gotta determine if the risk justifies the end goal.
