Picked this up for under the price of a used 4x4 ATV. This will be our new get around the lease vehicle. Camo paint job soon to come...

Hope it costs less to get hunt ready than the '86 Bronco I bought 2 years ago. 'Don't quite have 10 times what I paid for it in it, but I can see it from here! laugh bang

So much for "ready" Needs alternator...easy fix. Rear drive shaft literally slipped out of transfer case within the first 5 minutes. It's raised so much the drive shaft is to short. Dropped it off this morning to get a longer one. Winch worked great! Back at it Saturday....for now it's parked.

Curious where you found that at. Looks like one I was debating on but all jeeps are pretty much the same looking.

That may be the same one I was looking. It's been for sale a long time. Sounds like a decent deal for sure. Can't beat cover heat and ac.

Did you test drive it before you bought it?

Re: Just couldn't pass this up over an ATV... - 01/06/17 02:54 AM

I did test drive it....about 3 blocks on pavement. The PO was super nice and let me come to his shop and work on it the day after I bought it. Cleaned it up...cap wires rotor plugs oil change wipers. He had his shop guy drop gas tank to get rid of the old fuel, new fuel filter, air filter, pcv ect. Has 8in long arm "something or other" on front end. Rock Crawler with 35" tires. For the price I couldn't go wrong. He is working on the drive shaft for me right now....will pick it back up tomorrow and reinstall it on truck saturday, weather permitting.

Make sure to check the steering box mount. Those are notorious for cracking when you lift those. Not a hard fix but a pain in the butt.

Cool ride. I've got a 4X4 Ford Explorer that I used to use on the lease, now it just sits. Probably need to get it all up and going again and sell it.

I wish I could say I've only had one or two of these expensive lessons in my life, but they seem to rear their ugly head regularly every few years.

Can you weld? If so very easy fix and I can walk you through it to where it will never break again.

Time to unload it. You do not seem too mechanically inclined and it is going to eat you up in repair bills to shops. But, to each their own.

Re: Just couldn't pass this up over an ATV... - 02/06/17 08:23 PM

Unload it...just got it running good. It does not have a skid plate underneath and the brush keeps pulling out plugs. I've ziptied everything up the best I can so..... With $3100 total to date invested in it...we're going to run it till, till, ..... well till I have to buy another part.

I don't think you did bad, good ongoing mechanical experience for your son and something that will work on your lease. I still can't bring about in my mind the justification for a UTV specially when they they are 10-20 grand. confused2

Interesting...I just bought a 74 CJ5 for the same reason last night! Now, when I bought it, I knew it needs new brakes, and I know the steering box leaks like a sieve. Other than that, it seemed off road ready. I really hope I don't find a whole bunch of issues too!

Re: Just couldn't pass this up over an ATV... - 02/08/17 11:04 PM

The one I have was lifted and welded with 35" tires. Didn't realize that certain parts have to be reinforced and everything has to be lengthened (driveshafts) I learned all this on a jeep forum. Good luck with yours for sure!! I've had one whole weekend with zero issues since it was dropped off at our lease. This upcoming weekend hopefully will be the same.

Re: Just couldn't pass this up over an ATV... - 02/08/17 11:52 PM

It looks to be the stock suspension. I was a previous jeep owner, so at least I'm already familiar with a lot of the mechanics. the stock suspension on those old jeeps already sits fairly high. High enough that I can fit 32's without any mods, 33's if I feel like breaking out the sawzall. smile

Don't ever admit that about a jeep. Doomed next time now.

That's ANY older vehicle that's getting used like this one most likely is...
