6.4L Ford Advice - 10/25/16 10:15 PM

I am looking at a 2010 F250 6.4L. I know the 6.4L motors had issues. Are the later ones (2010) any better than the first ones. I see a lot of them still on the road. I know this has been probably beat to death on here but my search skills stink. Any reviews or advice other than don't do it?

That's rolling the dice. If you go that route youll need to drop an additonal 4-5 grand to bullet proof it. I'd look at 2014 or later 6.7L the 2011-13 have ceramic bearings in the turbo that they have had some issues with which they corrected in the 14 and up models.

Some people have owned them a couple hundred thousand miles with no issues, others were out $13k for a new motor before 100k. Me, I can't see why anyone would take the chance with that kind of money on the table.

Had one and loved it, but I think I got lucky. My dad's about to trade his off as it's spent more time in the shop than not lately. I don't want to get too much into your finances, but I would save up a little more and get a 6.7. 11s and 12s had some issues (so they say, I'm pushing over 300K on an 11) but 13 and up is supposed to be solid. There are quite a few on here that run them with not many complaints. Whatever you do, have money set aside for some deletes not long after you get it.

I bought an '09F350 new sept of 09. Did the egr/dpf delete at 95k, sold it last summer with 187 on the odometer. Had to run it with tuner, never went above mild mode. Towed a couple 38' gooseneck that weighed 14-15k lbs. The 6.4 doesn't need head bolts. I had no major issues. Just the usual couple sensors and a lp fuel pump around 160k. That's usually when I run into normal wear and tear issues on my ford diesels. I guess I've been lucky.

Thanks guys I know a few people that are still in them with close to above 200K without a ton of problems. Don't know anyone with horror stories personally, but I know they are out there. Have talked myself into and out of it numerous times the last few weeks.

If you had one I would delete it and give it heck.

Your are shopping right now... I think there are too many way better options than to buy one. I would buy an older 6.0 before I bought a 6.4.

Cheapest route is the 6.0 and bullet proof it.

Biggest issue with 6.4 is radiator and HP oil pump. Had a 6.4, only issues I had where radiator, since it was under warranty I went with stock. The after market ones, fix the issues.

I've had 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7. 6.7 is best engine. 6.4 and 6.0 aren't bad when the main issues with them are fix with aftermarket .

6.7 would be my choice. If I found a lightly used 6.4 I wouldn't be scared if it was a good deal

I got 160k on mine and shes never let me down... pretty cautious when it comes to service.. I do a full service every 4-5k. lengthy oil intervals and lots of regens is what gets most in trouble... oil don't lube well with diesel in it.. love the truck though... no cold start.. it will tow anything that my old dual wheel would.. rides great..
