Vehciles left on the lease

Guys, I'm new to this and we don't lease any land here in Tennessee. So forgive my stupidity. But I'm still trying to compile my stack of Texas knowledge before we move.

I see several mentions of people leaving their vehicles / ATVs/ on their lease. Are you folks just leaving them sitting out in the middle of the land? Or are they at some type of secure location?

If you did that here someone else would own it in about a week ......

I know a guy that built a small shed deep in the woods of his place and leaves his UTV in it year round. No problems.

I know of others who have invested in shipping containers to lock stuff up in while away.

In my case, stuff is locked up, but like anything, if someone wants it badly enough, they can get it. That is the reason for insurance.

I am very fortunate to be on a high fence lease that has the ranch manager and the property owners living onsite. Because of that, I leave my Kubota RTV there all year long. Unless they need them someplace else, most of the other folks on the lease that have UTV's or ATV's do the same.

We would just park ours near camp in deep south Texas, our only problem were the mice which we had to leave bait out constantly. Also we would leave the hoods of the vehicles popped open. I wouldn't leave the keys down there in the camp, if someone wanted to hot wire it then go for it. I know every property is different, so you would have to ask previous hunters on the lease or neighbors.

My friend in Bracketville just leaves his vehicles unlocked so they don't show up to a broken window.

One more question if I may ........ I know that terrain varies everywhere, but if I owned a Wrangler wouldn't that be sufficient to drive to the lease and then use it there? Eliminating a vehicle and not having to leave it there?

Terrain is the key. I can drive my Tundra 4x4 pretty much anywhere on my hill country lease. However, over the past 4 years I've destroyed the factory skid plate and blown two tires. So I try to drive my UTV because I'm afraid that one of these days I'm going to finally hit a rock and do some serious damage to the truck. I can walk back to camp if I break the UTV; I can't walk from San Antonio to Houston if I break the truck.

A Wrangler should work perfectly. I did it on several occasions. You can't haul too much crap, but it doesn't take too long to unload when you get home! Depending on how long your staying though, you might want to consider a trailer. I've also towed the Jeep behind a pickup on a couple of hunts.

Someday I might try to figure out if an over-the-cab RV on a van chassis, pulling a Jeep is pretty much the perfect hunting rig. I think maybe so.

Yeah ..... I like that idea!

Were lukcy enough to have an old barn on our place... We just pull our two four wheelers in there and chain them down. If they want em, they're gonna get em.

Mine were stolen twice before I bought a shipping container. But, that probably doesn't make much sense if you're leasing.

You will have more trouble with rats and mice than you will with thieves.

In east texas there a good chance it would disappear or parts would be missing from it when you go back.

...EXACTLY...They love electrical wires under the hood and underneath the car..AND they love the AC box under the dash in winter....

I can't tell you how many reports I've taken from people for stolen 4 wheelers and stolen trailers from their dear leases. Thieft is always a possibility.

Take photographs of your vehicle, trailer whatever it might be from a distance be sure and get the who thing in the pic. Photograph the VIN and any distinguishable marks. Keep those photos in your phone in case you're the victim of theft.

I've had people report theft of feeders and stands. Be sure and inscribe your name and DL number with an engraver. This helps with the recovery. Without some type of marking its almost imposible to prove its your feeder vs any number of feeders of the same make and model.

Yes but remember we use hours for travel time not miles... as a former wrangler owner... I'm not a fan of them for long trips.

Most ranches probably have good enough roads where you don't really need a lease vehicle with that said atv's and sxs don't rut things up as bad when wet.

The wrangler should be fine in most cases. I have left a vehicle on our lease for the past 15 years with no problem. We keep the gate to the property locked so that helps I am sure. Built a shed to park it in and we do leave bait out for mice. This is central Texas area.
