Suburban Ideas...

Suburban Ideas... - 07/13/15 09:27 PM

We just picked up a "new to us" Suburban for the ranch, and the first thing we need to do is put a high rack on it. Need some ideas, thoughts, etc. on building a high rack. Can we just attach it to the roof rack mounts, or does it need to be welded to the frame down below? Give some ideas fellas.

First picture is how it sits currently. Second picture is how I would LIKE it. Sent that second picture to my "hobby welder", and that would cost as much as I paid for the Suburban itself. Need to trim it down some (not size...complexity maybe?), and still make it plenty roomy for 4 people up top.

Second pic appears to be top drive. There is a member with a nice Suburban on here can't remember his username though.

I don't know the first thing about high racks, but I have to think you will most certainly need to tie it into the frame and avoid putting any weight on the actual roof/roof rack, just like the second picture. Good luck and keep us posted.

Park it at Ramball's place. Come back in a week.

Definitely have to tie into the frame. The roof rack is just metal screws. Tying into the frame isn't hard, on this trucks there is plenty of room and easy access to the frame. Notice on the tan burb, he ran the square tube through the trailer hitch that's bolted to the frame, very easy and ingenious, that took car of the rear mount provided you have the factory hitch.

Nope! My feeder will be on the rear hitch offset to one side, or possibly weld a receiver onto the front guard.

I agree, but they were part of the deal. I suppose brush country can tear up chrome just as well as stock wheels.

If they bother you that much just spray paint them. If it were mine I would leave them alone until I damaged one...

Re: Suburban Ideas... - 07/18/15 02:12 PM

I believe you hunt way down south where you don't have to worry about low hanging trees, but up north removable seats and no hand rail mean the world for the places we try to call. If you remove the luggage carrier rails and use the mounting holes you should be good to go. Just reinforce the bolts with a piece of metal strap on the inside.

Adding railing is easy, just weld it on where you want it as tall as you want it confused2 I find railing just gets in my way.

Re: Suburban Ideas... - 07/26/15 08:57 PM

Coolest ride i have ever hunted in was a suburban with the top cut off. Rhino lined, all weather seat coverings, and a Bimini top. Ranch hands on both ends with the front wide enough to carry several south texas deer. Feeder on the front.

I will try to find some pics.
