Anyone Have Electirc Hunting Vehicle? - 04/07/15 10:04 PM

My Polaris Ranger is so LOUD. I was wondering if anyone used a electric ATV for hunting?

Depends on where you are hunting IMO - I have had guys on our lease over the years buy them and trade them the next year. Limited range and speed - there are new hybrids out that may fit your needs better. Run on battery and gas and you use as needed in each situation

I have an electric hunting vehicle. It began life as a golf cart, but about the only parts left from the original golf cart are the frame and body. Totally different electrical system, long travel atv-style suspension, etc. It will go 21MPH, haul two men plus 450lb of feed, and climb hills no problem. I can run a whole weekend on one charge.

Personally, it works great for me. It is very quiet. This has big benefits for not spooking game, but it is also nice to cruise around the ranch and be able to have a pleasant conversation.

But, our place is only 425 acres. As TLK said, it really depends on where you're hunting. If I was on a place ~1,500 acres or larger it would not be a very good solution due to range. I also don't have to contend with super-deep mud very often. If I did, a gas UTV would win hands-down.

I built mine because, so far, there are no factory UTV options that have it right. In addition to being very expensive, they are all very heavy which means range is reduced even further. However, I believe in the next few years we'll see some real game-changers like Li-ion battery packs and lighter electric-specific chassis designs.

Electrics also require maintenance, just of a different sort. You need to make sure the battery terminals stay clean and tight, the batteries stay watered and charged, etc. They are not a good solution for someone who doesn't maintain equipment and only wants to "change the oil" every two years.

I love my converted EZ-Go TXT. 48 Volt, lifted, limited slip diff, winch. I replaced all the wiring with heavier duty wire and parts, and adjustable controller. Made a world of difference in power and length of travel. Quiet, rugged, and dependable. Its no Polaris, then again, I have 1/5 the money in it.

I have a converted 48V Club Car. It works great for what I use it for.

electric is definitely quiet, but 2nd muffler will help a ton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75Hpodd1AcE

We put them on our ranchers - plenty quiet to not spook anymore . . .

Like others have said, it depends on where you are going to use it. I bought a 48 volt lifted golf cart to use on our 224 acre place. I loved the quiet and the range was never an issue. The suspension on the other hand is still basically a golf cart. Last November we got an electric Ranger. This thing is the cat's meow so far. All the positives of a Ranger in a quiet format.

As was said too, there is still maintenance that needs to be done regularly.

I still have my cart, for now. Need to put it on the web for sale.

Was also thinking of converting my ATV, but is quite wondering how to make it water proof.

I believe this electric vehicle are also off road worthy, just replace those oem tires with off road tires.
