BFG ALL TERRAINS

BFG ALL TERRAINS - 10/07/14 01:14 PM

Since we always seem to have debates on tires I thought I would share my experience with these tires. I work on my own vehicle and put these tires on my truck at 89,187 back in Feb. of 2010. Now I will admit that these tires need to be rotated and balanced every time you do an oil change (which is 6k for me using synthetic) in order for them to last.

Well with deer season upon us and my lease a few hours away I decided it was finally time to put some new ones on. I went back and looked at my service history to find the mileage at which I installed them. I am now at 183,994 which puts these tires at 94,807 miles. These tires still have about 5-6/32nds tread life left but with the mileage and age they are hard and starting to separate some of the treads which is the only reason I am replacing them. The tires are not separating in the normal sense but the tread is starting to have chunks come off the tread basically and could possibly cause a separation/blowout.

Again these tires need maintenance in order to last this long and keep them from chopping and wearing the tread unevenly.

Just thought I would share for those of you looking for new tires. One other thing is this tire has been the same tread design for about 15 years and hasn't changed. That should tell you something about a tire and it's performance. grin

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 10/07/14 01:24 PM

Every kind of tire needs to be rotated and properly maintained, not just the BFG's. These tires are very good, and getting that kind of mileage is impressive. Overall, they are a great tire for everyday use with the occasional offroading trip. My only complaint with these tires is in wet offroad conditions, or any type of mud - but really, they arent made for that so its hard to bash them too much there. I still like the BFG AT and will probably put a set on my wifes Land Cruiser when she is due up for new tires.

I am not saying i don't believe you but if you got that kind of mileage you might get a hold of BFG an let them know because i think that would be a big deal for them , i never have seen or heard of any BGF's getting over 50k and at that point they where bald. They are ok tires but would never use them on any vehicle that i depend on and drive any any kind of weather other than dry streets. And let the @ss eating begin GOOOOOOO

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 10/07/14 01:48 PM

I have ran BFG's on my truck with the exception of 2 sets that I tried those "other" brands. We run them on our work trucks that travel around town and we typically put 45-55k a year on those trucks, both city and ranch.

Never pushed one to 90k, but doesn't necessarily shock me. Most of ours will make it 60k without an issue and have tread left when we switch them out. If it is off season, we will push them farther.

Never got under 50k on any of the sets.

They are pricey, but worth it for the performance. Also never had an issue on wet roads and the two times I stuck one of the trucks, it wasn't the tires fault.

I have ran 3 sets of them to well over 80,000 miles and they were not bald.

I've had two set that never made it to 30k, with that's said that's on a F250 6.0 and 6.7

I have set now on Avalanche..we shall see how they do on a 1/2 ton. My best luck has been duratrac and toyo at II's

Well maybe not bald but you wouldn't pass inspection on them i bet , i like them but just not as an AT to me they are just a street tire.

I will post pics of the tread, build date (DOT) code, and also pics of service history with mileage and current mileage on the repair order. But you probably still won't believe me grin

Just bought those a couple months ago for the wife's Z71 Tahoe. We will see how those work.

You won't hear me complain about getting 90k out of a set of tires. BFG AT KO is the only tires I have ever used, but I don't keep trucks long enough to wear them out.

Yall tow very much ? My dad had a set on his F350 and he hauls a lot of loads around 14-20 lbs and he would wear out the back tires in about 25k if he was lucky so this last time he got the falken AT's so we will see how they hold up under heavy use.

We don't. All of ours were on 1/2 tons and at most, haul a 16' flatbed.

You half ton guys have it so easy...90k on one set of tires? I could run train car wheels instead of rubber and not get 90k

Got 40k with them on a dully... but you cant expect to much out of any softer tread and towing a lot.

My BF goodrich I put on the F250 are at 30k right now and about to rotate them
Posted By: redchevy

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 10/07/14 05:12 PM

Proper inflation and regular rotation make a HUGE difference in how long tires last. My cousin runs BFG mud terrains on a 3/4 ton crew cab cummins and has yet to get less than 63k miles on a set, he is on his 3rd set, got 63 out of the first and 65 out of the second.

Dad and brother both got over 65k miles on factory tires on crew cab d-maxes. Dad got little over 70k on the next set of bridgestone A/T's and is on a set of duratracs now.

I put 43k miles on the factory p-rated tires on my '11 z71 and they looked new when I sold them. All I did was keep properly inflated and rotated ever 7k miles.

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 10/07/14 10:03 PM

When I had my 1986 K5 Blazer I had BFG AT's on it. They were on there when I got it. No idea how many miles they had on them when I got it but I put probably 50K on them in the time I owned the truck and they were still on there with plenty of life left in them when I got rid of it too. I also towed a boat with it quite a bit and didn't notice any uneven wear.

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 10/07/14 10:37 PM

Worst tires I ever had in both the mud and wearing...I had them on 2 different Super Duty's and they flat sucked! Glad y'all have better experience than I did with them. I wouldn't put them on my truck unless they were free.

Sounds like they are obviously different in a 1/2 ton truck but I'll stick to the Toyo or Cooper.

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 10/08/14 12:04 AM

BHG All terrain / TA ..the last 7 have been replaced due to tread separation. Tires were rotated every 5000 miles. They all had good tread. I think the manufacturer has changed something. These were on a F-250 diesel. No more.

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 10/08/14 12:07 AM

My uncle ran them on his his Jeep that he bought new in 1993, he put 86,xxx on the first set then 80,xxx on the second set. The spare on the Jeep is the original 1993 tire, which is the original tread design. When I get home on Thursday I'll post a pic of the spare

Here's the first ro with mileage. Didn't notice the glare at first but it says replace wheels and tires. You will also notice my tech number 12351 is the same.

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 10/09/14 05:54 PM

I have 32k on the set that came from the factory on my Tacoma and they have ben good. Back in the day when Ford put BFG ATs on their 4x4s I could not get them off fast enough. They are not a mud tire and that is what I needed. They are good in the rocks and cactus. When this set wears out I will go back to Duratracs. I had Duratracs on my previous truck for 30k and really liked them.

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 10/19/14 08:59 PM

I have run them on an 87 GMC short bed since the early '90s and usually get around 65k on a set. The truck has almost 400K miles on it and still going strong. They are good tires. The only problem has been a couple of tread separations.
Posted By: Mambajeep

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 11/01/14 10:53 PM

Duratracs are better in the mud, much quieter, but the sidewall of the BFG is much better.

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 11/02/14 04:30 AM

I've herd they had a bad batch, my favorite tire is Procomp Xtreme All terrain, I've had two sets on my older F-250 and I get minimum of 50,000 out of a set. As soon as I get a little wear on factory tires on my 2012 there will be a new set on it too.

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 11/13/14 07:29 AM

I have had good luck with BFG's and Toyo but the best hands down is Michelin. Problem is they suck in mud.
Posted By: westexhunt

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 12/05/14 05:58 AM

I had good luck with AT/KO's for several sets (still worn out at 40-50k and suck in the mud) then I had three out of a set separate about half way through the tread life. I have run several different brands/styles since. This on 3/4 and 1 ton 4x4 diesels. I've gotten the most miles out of Michelin but they are not good for much but highway. I am now running MT/R's on my ranch truck and michelins on my highway truck. I cannot find a tire that will do it all... and last more than 20-30K. The ranch truck/highway truck has been my only solution. The MT/R's just hit 6000 miles and the fronts had lost 3/32's rears lost 4/32's at rotation. These might get 30k miles but they have already gotten me out of some mud holes, had no flats in west Texas, they drive good and are quiet for a mud tire. The michelin factory lt whatevers on my 12 F350 have 56k with 6k rotations and they have another 6-12k left. Lots of towing on both sets of tires, pretty heavy on the Michelins. Cooper will be my next highway tire, at $500 less than Michelin and made in Texas I have to try them.

Re: BFG ALL TERRAINS - 01/23/15 06:58 PM

If I was going to buy a MT tire it would definitely be the Goodyear MTRs. I ordered a set of Duratracs for my 2009 Tacoma through Discount but the installers grabbed a set of MTRs. The next day they noticed the MTRs were missing and they still had the Duratracs. I was headed to the lease to fill feeders so they said to just keep them or come back when I had time. I ran them for 3 weeks. I beat the carp out them on the lease because I had no use for MTRs on all 4 on my Prerunner. Other than the cactus thorns the tires looked new when I took them back. They are a little noisy on the road. Since I now have a 4x4 I am thinking about the MTRs when the BFGs I have wear out.

I had some michelins at that came new on my f350 and they were balded in 30000 miles, i have 2 friends with the same truck and theirs were the same. They make a good suv tire, ive switched to the new cooper discoverer AT and love them 15k miles and they look new and their an aggresive AT and $500 cheaper than the BFG's.

I've run a few sets of BFGs 60-70K miles on a diesel F250 and a diesel Excursion. Great tires. I've stopped running them recently as my last 2 trucks have 20" rims and 20" BFGs are stupid in price.

The sidewalls on them are amazing as well.

These tires have to be rotated and balanced religiously compared to other tires IMO to get the most ouf ot them. I rotate and or balance them every 6,000 miles.

Most of the times when I see BFG's that need replaced it is because of a vehicle with an alignment issue or they don't keep them rotated and balanced. Once they get a chop or wear pattern to them it is pretty much over.

Well make that 8....don't know if the last was tread separation or not. Developed a "flat "spot on one tire.

That is great...in the past The most I ever got was around 30,000 miles. For some reason the last 8 tires have been defective. Only occasionally pull load of around 10,000 miles. They get rotated and balanced every oil change, 5000 miles. The only good thing is every time except one I had the warranty they sell for around. $23.00

Got the new ko2 on my truck and already 10k on them. No signs of uneven wear or rapid wear. Still look new and a heck of a lot better off-road.
