Flint blade - 09/14/18 12:40 PM

Was asked to make a Solutrean style blade for a local professor to be used in his classes. This was done with hammer stones and antler with very little touch up on the edges similar to the Solutrean style of knapping. Just a tad over six inches long.

Is the blade used as we see it, or is it mounted in wood handle. Nice job on the knapping

James these were actually used as spear points, the Solutreans predate the Clovis culture and were large game hunters. Spears were used as close in weapons/defensive weapons not as a throwing weapon as most like to think, they needed large heavy duty blades.

Thanks. At six inches I can see how it would be used as a defense weapon. Thanks for the picture and information. I will look into the Solutreans cheers

Looks like their is some debating going on"

The Solutreans were an interesting bunch who left quite a lot of historical record, cave paintings dated at over 20,000 years not only show boats but also the use of bow and arrows. The debate will never end, just like the debate between Clovis and Folsom cultures.
