Florida Part-3 The Keys

The Keys....

We were supposed to make this trip last summer but the hurricane hit the keys the day we were to arrive there. While not as bad a Rockport, the middle keys (Bahia Honda, Big Pine, Summerland, and Cudjoe keys) were hit pretty hard. There was still lots of damage all over that area.....Key West and the upper keys were in pretty good shape. I was disappointed that the weather was overcast and rain but we knew that when we left. The weather prevented us going out to the Dry Tortugas and with the overcast the pictures simply do not do justice to the beautiful colors of the waters down there. We did not see a good sunset or sun rise the entire trip until driving back into Texas Monday night.

The key deer were really neat....very small and saw several of them.....

Chickens and iguanas were everywhere down there....a nuisance for most people....I thought they were entertaining....the people chasing them around that is.....

I really would have loved to see them before the hurricane damage.....I had tentatively planned to spend a couple nights in a B&B on Big Pine Key so we could use it as a base to explore up and down the keys....it was back open but the area was so torn up we drove on down to Key West to find a place to stay....it was really disheartening to see what it looked like before and after the storm....

Hopefully in 5-8 years thing will be more back to "normal" for them....I hope to go back, especially to see the Dry Tortugas but don't think it will be any time soon...may try again this fall but Im not sure we want to do that again so soon...who knows....

I love the Keys, always a good time and beautiful sights down there.
