Sunday Morning!

Sunday Morning! - 12/04/17 06:35 PM

What an adventure Sunday Morning was and one I will never forget! I had a good friend of mine meet me up a the lease for the weekend to catch up and hunt a little. We saw a ton of deer on Saturday evening after a slow morning and it made me think Sunday morning would be a good one. Boy was I right. I got into the stand about 620 and settled in for the morning hunt. While watching a broken up 8, young 6 point and a few does I get a text to check my snapchat. I open it up and see a good deer walking with a doe to the feeder where he is hunting. After a few texts are exchanged, I decide to get down and "run" (as fast as my out of shape butt can) over to where he was to try and get a crack at the deer.

I make it out of the blind and about 150 yards before my "run" becomes a fast walk. LOL. I get about 200 yards from the stand and find out that the buck has worked back in to the brush but his doe is still hanging out at the feeder eating the buck ration. I crouch walk to the side of the blind and the cat and mouse game begins; every time I peek down the hill to the feeder the doe has got me dead to rights but never spooks. My buddy then says after about 5 minutes "hes coming back out. I slowly rise up and see the buck to the left of the feeder and he is staring a hole through me. I duck back down slowly and wait for my buddy to whisper that he has taken a few more steps out where he was presenting a shot. "you'd better do it now before they get out of here"

I creep to the back of the stand after trying to find a way to get a solid rest and use the back right stand leg to steady me as I stand up and prepare for the shot. After a few deep breaths to calm down Steadied behind his shoulder and squeezed off.

He took off like a scalded dog with tail tucked and I thought immediately thought "crud I gut shot him". (self admittedly I am not the best shot in the world) then i hear the wonderful noise of branches breaking and leaves rustling, giving me hope that he crashed out. My buddy and I celebrate and head back to my stand to get all of my gear before beginning to track this deer. He keep saying to me "man you hammered him" which is reassuring.

30 long minutes later we start the process of looking for him, go to the spot of the shot.....no blood....where he went into the trees no blood......to the last place I saw him....no blood. I begin to have thoughts of a gut shot and not recovering this deer for a long time , as I turn the corner and look up all I see is white belly. Thank fully the shot entered behind the shoulder (he was quartering too a little) and lodged in front of the back hip. Took out lung and liver.

We take a few pictures and I get him field dressed. and go back up to the blind to call my dad and share the news with him. My buddy comes back with my truck and I hop on the ball hitch and we start towards the deer. I look over the top of the truck and stalking my field dressed deer is a bobcat. I get his 300 Win mag as my .270 is leaning against the feeder pen and steady the cross hairs and squeeze the trigger and the cat disappears.

What an amazing morning!
Sorry for the long post but the story made the hunt that much better.

What a story and what a good buddy for texting you over to his stand. I have buddies that would have shot him themselves. Out of curiosity was he permitted to shoot a trophy buck?

On our lease friends can shoot designated culls; if a trophy is shot is your buck and they can not come back. I am extremely greatful he was mindful and shared the info with me

Thanks everyone. It’s nice to get a good one on the ground with limited hunting time I have had this year. Not to mention my first bobcat!
