A GREAT TRIP WITH JENNA

A GREAT TRIP WITH JENNA - 11/22/17 10:23 PM

My daughter Jenna and I made it down to the lease last Friday night and met my brother there. We had a decent morning on Saturday and was able to briefly watch a nice 3 year old chase some does around. I'll be honest I got real excited when I first got a glimpse of him but after a better look I quickly realized which buck it was. Then the front blew in and the wind forced Jenna and me to head back to camp. I woke up late Saturday night early Sunday morning with a slight migraine followed by being sick to my stomach. It was a nice cold morning so I pushed through and made it to the blind anyways while Jenna and my brother slept in grin

That afternoon I left Jenna in town with my mom and granddad so they could spend some time together. Fast forward to Monday morning and I have a nice mature 9 pt we call Blade show up but he had broken his left side main beam during late bow season taking himself off the hit list for the season. I watch him hit 3 of my feeders before making it towards some does and scent checking them. I have a couple younger bucks come in to my South feeder before Blade made another appearance where he had checked out the does and headed back towards the other bucks. After being under the feeder for a few minutes and catch a glimpse of a nice buck coming out of the brush that I quickly recognize as Half A$$. Now you might be wondering what kind of deer name that is but he was given that name by another lease member that first saw him and immediately noticed he had a very small tail and barely covered his rear end rofl

He makes his way around the feeder before Blade turns and faces him. They have a quick stare down before Half A$$ turns and walks off a few yards and Blade returns to eating under the feeder. There are 2 younger bucks sparring in the background and Half A$$ is quarter away from me. I get setup and put the scope just behind the left shoulder and wait for him to turn slightly for a better shot. He lifts his head and turns towards me opening up enough for a clean shot. I send a round just behind the left shoulder from my 30-06 putting it straight into his offside shoulder. After the recoil I look up to watch the other deer disappear into the brush. Blade runs behind the feeder before stopping and turning back towards the blind. I look back through the scope and Half A$$ had dropped in his tracks. I continue to watch Blade circle for several minutes, going in and out of the brush not knowing what had happening to the other buck.

I gather up my things as Blade and the other deer finally leave the area. I get down and make my way to where my buck laid and finally put my hands on him. I thanked the good lord for a quick clean kill and this buck he had blessed me with.

After taking him to the processor I pick Jenna up from my granddad's and we head out for the evening hunt. We get to the blind and I corn the ranch road between my North and South feeders. At around 4:40 a small group of 75lb hogs show up at my North feeder 200 yards away. I quickly put the ear muffs on Jenna and get setup. I get them in the scope and line up on one of the spotted ones as I haven't been able to take a spotted hog yet. As I look closer there is another one directly behind it so I squeeze off a round and the both flop over under the feeder.

A few minutes later I ask Jenna if she wants to go check out the pigs and she immediately says yes. As we start to gather up our stuff I see a light colored buck 230 yards away down the roadway. I quickly glass and see it's Spikezilla which is the spike I was hoping would show up while Jenna was in the blind with me. I ask her again if she wants to go see the pigs or if she wants me to try and get a shot on the spike. She says to shoot the spike grin.

He makes his way towards the blind eating the spread out corn but never gave a good shot opportunity. I got situated into position in for a shot in front of the blind where I expected him to show back up through a clearing that I had corned as well but he never showed. After waiting for a while I noticed him come out to my North and making his way towards the other deer in the roadway and the North feeder with the 2 pigs laying under it. He made it to about 175 yards before stopping broadside. I send another round out of the 30-06 and see him run off into the brush.

We give each other a high five and I tell her that we have to wait before we can go looking for him. After about 20 minutes we start to gather up our stuff and begin to make the walk towards where he was standing. We begin to look for blood and follow a small trail to which I quickly noticed I had gotten the front part of the guts but confident that it also took out lungs. After a short distance finally good blood starts to appear. Within about 20 yards to the brush line I can see him laying just inside the brush. As we continue to follow the blood letting Jenna take the lead we make it a few feet into the brush when I see her turn and she quietly says "there he is". What an awesome moment having her with me!! I can't wait for the future to see her actually take her first deer and also experience this same excitement with her younger sister.

What a great extended weekend and even better to create these lifelong memories with my daughter! Hope y'all enjoyed.
