Bobcat stalking deer?

Bobcat stalking deer? - 11/16/17 06:29 PM

Pulled the SD card last night and found this pic. I happened about an hour before I pulled the card. I'm no expert, but it would appear to me this cat is stalking these two deer.

Agree or disagree?

Maybe but probably more like looking for a rabbit and found a deer. I'm thinking it would have been a wildazz ride had he latched on.

Could be. Bobcats will definitely take down a fawn when the opportunity presents.

Re: Bobcat stalking deer? - 11/16/17 06:54 PM

i had this discussion this last week.
i think they'd eat a horse if it'd stand still long enough.
time to shoot it or a coyote if you see one while out with
a gun. just my preference. i prefer to see rabbits and squirrels
and fawns and calves rather than not see any and wonder why.
most every landowner i've ever dealt with said to shoot them
on sight. they're on the non-game list along with coyotes and
mountain lions

My son and I watched a bobcat stalk 3 does from a creek bottom across a cedar break and into an open field before the deer booked it.

Highly doubt it's going after that deer. There are usually rats, rabbits and quail feeder with the deer.

I've seen numerous times where they walk within 10 yards of a deer and they don't even try to run. They have very little chance catching and bringing down a deer that's not a new born.

Two years ago I watched a bobcat stalk a doe feeding in the center of a 1/2 acre plot. The cat entered the edge of the plot and immediately crouched belly down to the ground. Every time the doe lowered her head to feed the cat made two or three creeps forward. It did that a half dozen times. It got to within ten feet of her before she spotted it. When she bolted the cat was right behind her at full tilt as they both entered the tree line and I lost sight of them. That cat wasn't after rabbits, it was after that doe.

Doubtful.

We have tons of Bobcats on our property and I see them regularly when out on a deer stand.

Not saying that a hungry bobcat would never attack a deer, but there are just so many other things (rabbits, mice, birds) that are easier and more plentiful prey. A fawn deer being the exception.

Also, IF that cat really wanted those deer, it wouldn't be right out in the bald a$$ open.

It would be about 2" off the ground and in a quite noticeable stealth mode. I've been fortunate enough to see them take squirrels and birds at feeders and you basically don't even know they are there until they actually attack (its just a blurr).

I think it’s stalkkng the corn. Seriously though, I would say it was after a rabbit or something And just happened by the deer. Not saying it wasn’t going for the deer but who knows?

My neighbors kill every varmint they can, bobcats included. They say it's not uncommon for a large Tom to attack and kill a fully grown deer.

My ex BIL watched a big Bobcat take down a full size doe on his ranch!

It certainly looks big enough to take that deer down and it appears to me that the deer is the target.

I watched a bobcat wait on top of a brush pile for a doe to walk by. Jumped square on her back and the rodeo was on! Cat lasted about 3 jumps before it bit the dust. Bob rolled over twice popped up and looked at the doe. Doe ran about 15 yards after throwing the cat then just stood there and looked back at it. Then they both slowly turned and walked off in opposite directions.

There was a video going around last year of a bobcat hat jumped out of a tree and killed a small buck. Pretty cool video other than being a bit shaky I'll see if I can find it and post it.. I'm not sure how to link it but this is he link to the face book where I saw it. And if you look closely he halready had a deer he was eating on the lag he was sitting on. Again not sure if you can click e.g. Link but if you copy and past it then it should work.

Two different times, years apart, I have seen does chase bobcats out of the country. That's not to say the opposite can't happen.

Sit on one of my spots and there's a good chance your going to see a Bob Cat, they get a pass. I've watched deer alert on cat's and 90 percent of the time they end up following them until they're out of the area. I've yet to see any evidence of a Bob Cat attacking a full grown deer. The video Sapper posted is a Mountain Lion attacking a mule deer. They will feed on a carcass or a gut pile.

Re: Bobcat stalking deer? - 11/17/17 02:42 PM

I have seen bobcats kill mature South Texas does and even cover them as a lion would in certain situations. When this occurs, it is usually a big tom as it takes extra power and weight to bring down such a large prey. A fawn is no match for a grown bobcat and while they will feed on more rats, rabbits and birds, a cat is an opportunistic hunter and will take advantage of a situation.

Re: Bobcat stalking deer? - 11/17/17 02:56 PM

It's 1 of 3 things:

It's stalking another, smaller animal under the feeder. (most likely)

It's putting on a mock stalk, where it's practicing, but will stop short of attacking the deer. (cats do this all the time - I've seen house cats stalking deer).

It's old/sick and actually gonna try because it's desperate. It won't be alive long if this is the case. Could also be young/dumb and not realize the size of the deer. It'll get close and just quit once it has the full picture.

Re: Bobcat stalking deer? - 11/17/17 02:58 PM

Late last season on our place we saw more bobcats than we ever have. In one week, I saw three different bobcats running hard after fawns that were ~ 8 months old. I killed one that weighed exactly 40lbs. If you don't think that Tom wouldn't take a fawn, doe or worn-down, post rut buck you're dead wrong.

HWY_MAN is correct, in most situations, does will bluff bobcats out of the area. Bobcats killing grown deer is a rare occurrence but can happen.

Funny this thread should come up... Last Friday night I got in the stand just before sunset, watched this Bobcat showup and lay down on the other side of my pen. Not wanting to try shooting through two set of hog panels (murphy's law), I didn't shoot. He starts to move as the light is going away and I notice a young buck then show up. I couldn't decide if it was video-worthy or not, so not a whole lot see...below are two short clips. The buck followed that Bobcat for about 100yds, I can't believe he didn't know what he was following. I thought it was very odd that a buck would follow a Bobcat like that.

This one first

Recently posted a photo of bobcat near one of my pens. Also, have had a couple of coyotes show up on the gamecam there. It also seems like the whitetail traffic has declined significantly in this spot so I wonder if they are hunting my spot....

While walking into this stand last weekend, I came across the remains of a fawn (lower legs)so I believe I'll shoot any predator if given the opportunity. Normally, I would give them a pass during whitetail season to focus on the deer hunt.

yep, have watched a bobcat stalk a fawn from a bow blind. When mom got concerned the bobcat ran away and I let the doe go on to live another day.
