A fun one to age...

A fun one to age... - 09/29/17 08:07 PM

Real curious what the THF says on this buck. I won't say what I think, or what year the pics are from, more fun that way.

How old is he in these pics?

And how about in these?

5.5 maybe 6.5 I'd probably go 6.5 in your area

Velvet pics are a waste of time other then mature or immature

Can you tell if he carried over the double split on his left? Never seen that before.

6, 5, 4, 3 top to bottom. The last picture in the dark, no idea. He's either 2 or 10. Handsome devil!

Top two pics are from 2015. Bottom three are from about 3 weeks ago. So, he's 2 years older in those vs top 2. How old does that make him now?

No, he didn't carry the split left G3 any further. Last year he was a 12 with matching split G2's.

Let's not get to carried away now. That's just a little bit of experience not smarts.

Nah it's true. Velvet pics are pretty worthless. Most people
swear that buck is no older than 3.5 based on this last pics.

I tried every angle and zoom to see if he carried over the spilt 3. Really cool and I have never seen that before on a WT,

Don't think I've ever been fooled on age as badly as I was on this one.

Hey don't sweat it. He is hotly debated within our camp. I'm generally pretty confident on our Hill Co deer, but this guys throws curveballs. He's not a large-bodied buck (even though he loves protein) so it can be tricky.

The other interesting thing is that he's going downhill antlers-wise. Makes me wonder if he's older than I first thought.

Re: A fun one to age... - 10/03/17 03:53 PM

See that's the thing that blows me away about him. I called him 6 in the first photo and 5 in the second, not knowing it was the same buck, same year. I could have easily called him 5 and 4, but that first photo and the mass of his body threw me.

Since you know that the bottom three photos are the same deer this year, he's got to be 6.5-8.5 years old when the season rolls around. No less than 4 in your first two photos. So I'll call him 5 then and 7 now. Let us know if you kill him and how old he is, please!

Will do! I'm afraid the jawbones will be the only way to say with any confidence how old he is. I could share other pics where you'd swear he was no older than 3.5 depending on the angle. Y'all have me thinking he might 6.5+ now.

I could have killed him last Nov, but passed thinking he was only 4.5 hammer

I called him old in the first two pictures 5.5 - 6.5 years... 2 years later, he looks young, but it is summer time and he is 2 years older.. He could be old and withdrawn looking. Now, just my opinion but, be sure its not a young deer with the same genetics as the deer 2 years earlier.. That would suck to stick him and find that out. The best thing is to see him on the hoof.
