Live cull hunt report

Live cull hunt report - 08/25/17 12:18 PM

Hi Guys

I once again have my old friend and his family Dr Chris Heil from Germany in camp. We are on a cull hunt again and I will try to keep this thread updated as we go.

On arrival we unpacked, had lunch and went straight out to the bush. At last light luck smiled on us and we got this old Waterbuck cow down.

We went out again this morning and another Waterbuck cow was shot, short after we found a herd of Blue Wildebeest. What looked like a good shot turned out into some serious tracking. The Blue Wildebeest is still on the run, but we are about to head out again and follow the tracks. Hopefully we will have better luck this time.

Day one has come to an end.
We did not find the wounded Wildebeest, but we were later on the tracks of another group of Wildebeest. After a long walk, we finally came into a position for a clear shot. This time everything worked out perfect and Chris let the 300WM bullet strike behind the shoulder.

Day two

It's 7:30am and we are getting ready for the days hunt.
The weather looks terrible but we will just have to work around it.

Seems like we are in for a long and cold day today

Never the less, breakfast table has been set and short after we will go out and see what the day delivers.

The weather did not cooperate very well today. After about 2hours on the back of the hunting rig we all decided to retreat to camp.
At the lunch table a decision was made to go for a bit of sight seeing, so we left for a nearby predator park.

The weather looks better for the rest of the week. So maybe tomorrow we will be in action again.

Day three

Today started later than usual. We left camp at around 8:30am.
Short after we were on the tracks of some Blue Wildebeest.
Needless to say we got busted just as we got to about 50y from them.

As the day continued we saw Waterbuck, Impala, more Wildebeest, Gemsbuck and Giraffe.
We got busted several times, till we decided to just head in a direction and start walking.

After about a mile or so we had passed on Kudu, Blesbuck, got busted by Wildebeest again. Then all of a sudden the bush became alive with a herd of Zebra.

Chris and I made a short stalk and for a second we thought we were busted again. a Big stallion ran into the open and stood broadside at around 100y. With a perfect short to the neck the Zebra dropped in its tracks.
In our followup, we saw that the rest of the herd did not move far, I quickly got Chris back on the shooting sticks when a big mare came into the open. Yet another perfect shot and a short followup, we found our second Zebra.

Day four

Today is yet another cold and wet day. We have been out into the bush but with no luck. We came close to a herd of Wildebeest but in this weather there is just no way they will stand and wait for us to get into a shooting position.

Seems like the weather will not clear up today, so we are back in the lodge and enjoying a hot cup of coffee.

Day four ended on a high note when Chris dropped the hammer on yet another Blue Wildebeest cow.
After a long walk and playing the wind right, we finally got to a clearing and the Wildebeest herd were all standing about 150y from us. This time it did not take long for Chris to get the cross hares behind the shoulder and make a perfect shot.

Day five

At dinner table last night, Chris asked me about the possibility of shooting a Big old Giraffe bull.
After about 40 trips to Africa, this would be Chris's first attempt to shoot one of there giants.

We left camp earlier than usual, yet another cold day seemed to ahead of us.
We left in two vehicles this time to cover as much ground as possibly in a shorter time. It was not long till I heard the crack on my 2way radio when the other crew called in to report the sighting of a lone bull that they have spotted.

We made our way in their direction. About 30min later we were on the tracks of a Giraffe that might be one we are after.
With the dense vegetation and heavy fog on top of it, the advisability was very poor.

I came around a big Candelabra Tree, when I saw the massive bull for the first time. Only problem was, we have also been seen.
Chris and I ducked down and made our approach. Just as we got to about 70y the old bull moved even deeper into the thickets.
For a moment we lost all viability to our quarry and started to walk into ta direction where I thought he might have gone. About 20min later we came to an old road and as we entered it I noticed the bull standing to our left. He was about 100y from us, but I told Chris, IT's NOW OR NEVER.

I got Chris onto the shooting sticks and within second the silence of the early morning was disturbed by the blast of the 300wm. The bullet struck low on the neck and the bull ran down a game path, with Chris and I following at a quicker than usual pace.

The bull stood still for a second, just enough for Chris to put another round through the lungs. This time he did not go far. The old bull came down just 20y from where he was secondly shot.
By the time we got to him it was all over and silent.

This has been a huge event for Chris and even more so for me to be with him at this time.
29 August 2017 is a day that will long be remembered by both of us.
