Badger?

Badger? - 07/16/17 04:09 AM

Anyone else think the animal with its hind end to the camera is a badger? Those are raccoons in the background.

I'm surprised a Badger would let a Racoon stay that close to it AND I'm sure I'll get blasted for this but....... I've never had a Badger inside a feed pen.

I don't think it is a badger. My guess is a raccoon that is swishing its tale and you can't see the stripes.

I would say badger, coons stripes go around the underside of the tail as well and that doesn't have any. Looks like the stance and build of a badger from the back.

That's what I was seeing Marc. It's back end looks much stouter than a coon, the tail is shorter and proportionally about the length of a badgers with no stripes and coons don't typically hold their tails in that position.

Wish I had another photo of it, but I had the camera set for 5 minute delays and nothing showed up after that.

Tough one even for a Badger expert like me laugh

Even though it does have a wide stance like a badger, legs look to long and it stands a little to high for a Badger. Going with another corn stealing coon. I think the reason you do not see the stripes on the tail is because of the cameras light refraction off its tail is causing a sort of white out up

if it were a badger, that coon would not be there, alive anyway.

It's another coon.

Body shape is wrong for a badger.

The badger we have in Texas is the American Badger, it has black legs and feet, the tail is short and tapers noticeably (wide at base of body, tapers to tip, almost V-shaped).

It appears you have a raccoon that is upset with the others and is simply bristled up a bit and has thrown its tail up and over its body.

The infrared light from the camera often reflects and washes out features of the animals color (hence no rings apparent on the tail). I can provide dozens of pictures of deer and other animals that look almost completely white...when they are close to the camera.

Another clue might be IF badgers are even 'common' in your area? IF it is a badger, how did it gain access to that pen? Did it go through the 'root through door' or climb the panels?

I'm sure badgers have visited corn feeders, but I'd wager it is rare.

So what is the likelihood a badger climbed the panels to get to some corn that raccoons were already there eating....versus it just being another raccoon?

I have trapped 8 badgers on our place and have never seen one at a feeder or on camera. Our badgers must not like corn.

Coon but we have seen them in our pens before.

Cameras can fool you. 95% sure it's just another coon.

My initial thought was a coon but Marc challenged that so I reviewed a few pics of badgers and it's tail could pass as one from a badger but the more I considered...I still believe it's a coon.

I didn't want you to be disappointed back

Looks a bit tall to be a badger...given the animal is with raccoons....my guess it is a racooon.

Camera at night can do funny things. Could be a porcupine. I have seen coons and porkies eat off a corn pile together many times.
