First hog with a shotgun

First hog with a shotgun - 01/10/17 03:51 AM

Decided last week to start scouting for hogs on Ft Hood bc it's close to home and lots of critters. Found some spots on google earth and went and scouted. Decided on a spot and corned it and set up a cam and let it rest for 4 days. Went to check the cam this morning and had this large boar on the cam at 0830 so I drove home got my stuff and headed back. I built myself a brush blind and the wait began. Right at dark I heard him making his way from my left exactly where I expected him to come from and I gave him a dose of 00 Buck from about 30 yds out of my grandfather's Remington 870 Wingmaster and he dropped in his tracks. Feels good to put my grandads shotgun to use almost 50 yrs after he first purchased it.

Killing a hog with a shotgun is good.
Using your Grandfather's shotgun to do it - is great!

Pig hunting with a shotgun is addictive!

I started doing it last year for the first time and was impressed with the damage one can do with 00 buck. On top of that its a whole lot easier to aim a open site scatter gun in low light than a scoped rifle. And fleeing pigs don't stand a chance when 3.5" 00 buck is headed their way!

Yeah, 00 hits them really, really hard. I was up in a tree and shot 1 at about 7 yards a few years back. Medium size pig, probably about 140 lbs...

Sounded like somebody smacking a brisket with a baseball bat as hard as they could. Pig rolled, groaned a terrible sounding death grunt, and didn't take a step. Steam from the buckshot in its lungs came out the nostrils and mouth.

Super intense. Really packs a punch.

my 870 Wingmaster only takes 2 3/4 shells but it still hit very hard and at 30 yds I got at least 8 of the 9 pellets in the vitals. My uncle said I can chamber a 3 inch for the first shot and said my grandpa use to do it but I'm not taking that chance since the barrel says 2 3/4

Re: First hog with a shotgun - 01/12/17 09:10 PM

Smart thinking. I would stick to the 2 3/4
