They're eating the fruit. I've eaten jelly made from them, the fruit has spines but nothing like the stalks do. Deer will eat them also.

HwyMan, I want to see you nibble one of those fruits off without getting a mouthful of stickers. She even used her tongue to wrap around it and then bit it off. Noway I could that. Tough critters.
