Sharpened Machete this morning.....note to self:

Sharpened Machete this morning.....note to self: - 11/17/16 06:42 PM

Note to self: When cutting pine saplings....you WON'T need to use as much force on those down strokes as before. grin

Addendum to note to self: IF you don't adjust your swing (for the now sharp blade)...it WILL cut though the pine and continue on until it meets your shin. Said 'shin' being much harder than pine will stop the blade.... but not before the blade embeds itself about 1/4" into your bone.

P.S. take band-aids with you when you go to the woods. Alternately, be more careful than I was.

Flint.

you could use a pedicure.

Re: Sharpened Machete this morning.....note to self: - 11/17/16 06:51 PM

Meh....just one of those things.

Had to find a rag in the truck to tie around it to get the bleeding to stop. Normally have a first aid kit with me, but it was in the ranch truck and I have to put a new starter in it today, so I was in the Land Cruiser.

Its my own fault, just in a hurry to clear out a path.

Provided no infection gets started....we are good to go. Bone hurts a little, but that's to be expected.

Hah, yeah I deserve that. wink

This is actually only the second time I've 'whacked' myself in over 45 years of using a machete, so all in all..not a bad track record.

I was just going too fast and didn't allow for how much easier the 'sharp' blade was cutting the saplings. It went through the one pine like butter and I couldn't stop the 'over swing'.

Oh well....no big deal. Just be careful out there guys and keep a first aid kit handy.

Thats my take on it too. If I can make it stop bleeding (or put a stitch or two in it) myself, then I'm not driving 25 miles into town to sit for a couple of hours.

Too much to do around the ranch for that. If you hack through a tendon or something...that would be different. But not a shin bone. grin

sounds like you didn't sharpen it enough. rofl Seriously though if you hit the bone clean it good. I got a catfish fin stuck to the bone and they had to scrape it to keep bacteria off the bone.

I have sharpened a few machete in my line of work and yes that seems to be a common problem. You get use to hacking those limbs and don't expect it to cut right through. Ouch that will leave a mark. Good times

Hah!

Already told you in that other thread, I'm NOT wasting my handloads. wink

Went to go check my game camera this morning and I walked back to where I 'hacked' myself. Found some of my own 'blood trail' on the grass leading back to the Land Cruiser, kinda funny.

The picture I posted shows the only 'rag' I had in the vehicle that I could wrap around the wound. I had already wiped my leg off with some napkins I had in the console and applied pressure for awhile so the blood would stop running down my leg and into my shoe.

When I first looked down at my leg the blood was flowing in 'pulses' with each heartbeat, running down my shin and going into my shoe. Held some pressure on it with the napkins, but the first two quickly got soaked, so the last one, I doubled over...placed on the cut and then wrapped it with the rag and pulled it tight with a knot. Didn't look so bad after that.

The cut is pretty much closed up this morning. Shin bone hurts....but its supposed to.

Got to go put that starter in the ranch vehicle today. Yee-hah...!

Had catfish fin when I was about 8 or 9 run through my thumb. Dad had to pull it through after cutting it off flailing fish. After they calmed me down he just took mouth full of monkey blood and blew through the hole. I passed out but it healed and no issues.
