Camp is coming along...ain't much, but it'll do

Got on 1500 acres lease between George West and Freer. This camper was left by the heirs of a former member who has passed on. It will now serve as my camp house. Needed lots of cleaning, a few bug bombs and a lot of electrical repairs. I got the electric gremlins worked out though. A/C, fridge and microwave all work perfectly. Saw lots of wildlife to include deer, turkey, quail, dove, javelina, hogs and yotes....oh, and rattlesnakes. Including one rattler that crawled up on top of a feeder motor, presumably to catch birds. Stands and feeders are set. Now ready for the season to kick off.

That's what deer camp is suppose to look like. All you need is some shade, a grill, and a place to sleep.

Yep, looks like deer camp, just missing a nice little lean-to to keep your self out of the elements and don't forget mice traps/bait.

Gonna build a covered "patio" between the camper and the mesquite tree. The camper will block that north wind and the tin roof will keep every dry.

When we got our place down south we slept in a tent, bed of the truck, or on a 16-foot flatbed for about 4 years. I appreciate the a/c and heat, but sure do miss looking up at them stars!

Good to have a camp. Place to kick up your feet and stay out of the weather.

Shoot man you got all of the fundamentals you need to live large. You have a smoker, grill, trailer to sleep in and a water tap and hose, if you have running water you rock More shade is all you need buddy!

Looking Good!! I travel through there pretty often. There is some good looking and diverse brush in some areas of that stretch of road but water can be scarce. I've seen lot's of rattlesnakes down there but on top of the feeder motor is a new one...better really watch your step.
How far out of Freer are you?

did the same back in the day - slept on the ground in a sleeping bag - homemade table, coleman lanterns and cook stove - gotta say it made me appreciate my mobile home I now use

I'm pretty stoked about it. Surprisingly, the water works. Just have to run up the hill to the well and turn on the well pump. 700 ft. well, so water is good and drinkable.

A buddy and I are on this place together. We set out feeders several weeks ago and put out trail cams. Nothing exceptional showing up, but there's more bucks than does. Most are young 8 & 10 points, a few pigs, javi's and even a badger. The deer are cleaning up all the corn at every feeding. I'm happy that there's not an oak within miles and therefore no acorns.

The place is roughly 15 miles north of Freer.

Not sure I'd be brave enough to sleep on the ground with so many rattlers around. The grass is up to armpits, making it tough to "watch your step".

If possible, I would extent the roof to cover the trailer. Lot's of headaches when the trailer roof takes a beating in a hailstorm. Lastly, do the toilets work? I'm at the age where going "outside" shouldn't be an option.

I'm fortunate to be able to step out my back door and start hunting, but that looks like an excellent deer camp to me. You have everything you need and nothing you don't.

Thanks guys. Since it's our first year here, we're gonna see how things go before investing too much here. Shade will come in the form of EZ-Up canopies. If all goes well and we decide to stay, we would consider a newer, bigger camper. In the meanwhile, an outdoor toilet and shower is what we'll have.

I've always said that deer camp should only be mildly comfortable for men and woefully inadequate for women. You don't want to encourage women to want to be there every weekend. I think this place fits the bill.

Awesome area to hunt, we have a place just south of Falfurrias that buts up to the King ranch fence for 2 miles. Plenty of turkey and hogs in that area as well. Good luck this season.

You can't see it, but just behind the BBQ pit is a very large mesquite log that someone cut into a bench. Works great to sit or prop your feet up on.

Now, tell us more about this rattler that crawled up on a feeder motor. I never thought rattlers were partial to climbing much of anything.

I thought the same. Never seen anything like, yet there he was. Knocked him off with a stick. He had the spinner blade stuck and it wouldn't throw corn.
