Age, Width and Score Guesses? - 08/31/16 02:33 PM

He has a split brow which makes him an 11. Beautiful Buck, tell me your thoughts? No idea why photos came out sideways? hammer

I see a 5+yo with a lot of beam and pretty decent mass, medium point length. I would put that dude in the 150ish range..

I see a 6 or maybe even 7yr old(1st pic) from those pics. I can't get him out of the mid to upper 130's with a 20" or so inside spread. confused2

You're getting blind in your old age. 54" of tines, 80" of beams and mass and 20" inside = 154. If the man kills him I'll make you a wager of $1 that the buck is closer to 150 than he is to 138. Deal?

Maybe high 140s. I'm not seeing enough main beam length and tine length to go any higher. Very nice buck. up

You think hes got avg of 4-5inches of mass?

Re: Age, Width and Score Guesses? - 08/31/16 07:29 PM

Remember when Ray Sasser put out his two books 92-93 and 93-94 deer seasons comprised of all Texas Big Game Award winners? I made a sort of spread sheet. Mature bucks in that book averaged 75"-80" of mass and beams. So I always use 75" for quick, in the field scoring of trophy deer in Texas. Iowa, it's closer to 100". To me, beam length and mass are the two most time consuming parts of scoring deer on the hoof. So I found a short cut that has served me well for years. Tine length x2 (unless they're unbalanced) + inside spread + 75" will get you very close to actual gross. 80" if the deer has better mass and longer beams.

I think that deer probably has 46" of beams and 32" of mass, so 78. 80" was close enough for this exercise. Or, you could just drop the 5" from 80 and call him a 151.

Ranchman has been at this a lot longer than me and knows big deer as well as anyone in the business. He and I are typically very close on score. That's why I was surprised by his guess of not getting out of the mid to high 30's. Maybe I'm the one getting blind?

Re: Age, Width and Score Guesses? - 08/31/16 07:30 PM

Most pics look 5 but first one looks 6 maybe older.. 48" in tine length and a very generous 90 base for 138.. I bet he come up a little short on the base..

Re: Age, Width and Score Guesses? - 08/31/16 08:44 PM

Plus atleast 20inches of inside spread puts him around that 150 mark.

I have a buck on my wall that is almos identical to this guy that measures mid 150s. It our buck is a little shorter on tine length than the one on my wall. I think he is close to 22 inches wide. I think he is high 140s and may eclipse 150. Great looking deer.

I'm getting:
G1's: 3"
G2's: 7"
G3's: 9"
G4's: 4"
Total tines: 46"

Beams: 46
Mass: 27
Spread 20

Total 139

And I thought I was being a little generous. What did you have down for lengths?

I too was surprised...I have him in the low 150s....my best scored 143 and this buck looks better than he is.

I am not a betting man and would sure hate to take your money...but I will grin
I gave that buck 93" of down frame and 43" of up. When I looked at him I said 95" of down frame and add in tines then took my time and looked at every pic closely. What you are looking at in those pics are pics of pics on a screen. They are distorted and make him look much bigger than what he really is I think. Only one pic makes him look normal. What is normal in all the pics is his ear length, that does not change. I measured a few of my mounts just now quickly and they had 5.5" ears. I gave this buck 7" ears when I came up with my score on tine length. I gave him 7" total of brows(with the short extra), 13" on G2s, 15" on G3's and 8" on G4s. I gave him 45 on beams, 20" IS and 28" on mass. If he has a 95" down frame(adding 2") he still is only 138 on score. He does not look large bodied to me in those pics.
Compare this same buck in this pic to the other pics below.

Same buck looks much bigger now in those other pics. Think 7" ears to compare to tine length. I think he has closer to 5.5" ears.

I think you are looking only at the way he looks in those distorted pics for score. I am looking at ear length for a basis of tine length in my score.

On ranches I managed I did this starting in the early 90's. I used sheds off of bucks and also kept the records on bucks killed as management and trophies. I found that in the Hill Country those bucks were 85"-90"(total of MB, mass and spread) most of the time depending on spread and point count. So for quick reference for scoring I used 90" on 10's with average spread or wide 8 pts and 85" on basket rack 8 pts and 10 pts. After 5 yrs I had to increase it to 92.5" on average trophy bucks as the MB and mass increased a bit. Those were just quick references when a bucks stepped out to get a quick score. I would say 90" add up tines quickly to that score and now if he was a mature shooter. Most of the time the bigger top end bucks had a bigger down frame so they were much bigger when you walked up to them. Which was nice. I have used a down frame base reference for scoring for the last 25 yrs now. You can look at sheds around a ranch or records and have some basis to start with. Here on my place now I can only use 80"-85". Not much mass, MB length nor spread for that matter. Tine length is here, just not the rest.

He is still a great looking buck I hope my score from pics is like it normally is...6" low. The hunter and I both will be very happy if that is the case. If those pics are older then he may still grow a bit more.

I don't see 100" of frame on this deer at all. At least not from these pics of him.

Old Buck and a very nice but I think this deer goes mid to upper 140s tops
