He has been named "Clyde"

He has been named "Clyde" - 08/10/16 02:04 AM
We think this guy is making his first appearance this year, or he somehow magically morphed from a way smaller buck from last year. We have had two good years of rain (until the last few weeks of 100 plus temps). This is the fourth year on the lease and we haven't had anything close that we can recall. Any age and size guesstimates from the pros out there? The ole man is itching to get your thoughts. The dates are not 100% accurate but pretty close.
My dad has named him "Wide Glide Clyde" haha
This is about 2 weeks prior.
Thanks,
Houghtown

That dude is going to be 25 + inches wide. That's a rare main frame 8 that has a chance to hit 150+. With the non-typical points, he should get there.

He will be hard to pass no doubt. We have hunters on three sides of us, so if he makes it through this season it'll be a miracle. Luckily the Ole man and I like to bow hunt. We get out there a month before most of them. I'll post pics after he sheds his velvet.

There is no way I could pass on that deer, especially in your situation with hunters on three sides. That said, I believe he is a young deer.

Don't let it happen to you! I had a nice 4 year old I was watching and let him walk 4 times in 2 weeks, then on Thanksgiving day I got a call from my neighbor saying "Hey, Dad got "big boy". I told him to let him walk but you know Dad." One of the other guys told me the story and said that deer had just cleared my fence when he heard boom, boom and boom. He said he thought about calling me to make sure nobody was hurt on my place since the deer was so close to the fence. I'm glad those guys are gone now.

Re: He has been named "Clyde" - 08/10/16 01:48 PM
After looking at the first photo, I was guessing 6 1/2 years but in the other two photos, he appears a little younger. I much prefer to estimate age from a video and when they are closer to the rut as there are some other features that will show up that might improve my margin for error. Here goes, 5 1/2 years and I am sure I only missed him two years one way or the other. He is in very good body condition, where every he is, must be raining or he is getting to a free choice feeder.
Adios,
Gary

Looks 5.5+ years to me. I can never judge velvet deer, but I'd be surprised if he doesn't push 150". No way I'd let him walk!

I see a 7 yr old buck that is upper 150's crowding 160. I would not hesitate to shoot him if he was younger. He has calloused knees and is sitting down on his hooves. Body shape is that of a mature buck in great shape. Good luck!

Re: He has been named "Clyde" - 08/10/16 02:59 PM
NICE buck for sure, and I would have no qualms shooting him on sight.
However, don't see a fully mature deer here. I see middle aged for sure. He isn't a young one, but I would put him in the 4-5 yo category, possibly even three if being protein fed. No thick hanging brisket, flat back with no sway, no staining on the hocks, nice sharp nose that isn't romanized yet, and knees that are not knobby or scarred up. Take the rack away and the only thing on him that points to age is the greying around the face/eyes.
But having said all that, he'd be a dead buck on my lease if I could shoot straight, and if he walked out that would be in serious question...

Re: He has been named "Clyde" - 08/10/16 03:01 PM
^^^ I wirte that as STX is saying 7...ugghh. I don't se ehim sitting down on his hooves any more than other deer I have seen. I also don't see calloused knees. Maybe I need my eyes checked...
As said, to me it wouldn't matter about aging, he is a dead deer. But I have a lot to learn I guess.
Hope you stick him so you can check his molars and let us know is real age. Look forward to the hard antlered pics.

If I was your neighbor I would tell you he looks 2.5 and you need to let him go. Then cap him and never say a word! All is fair in hunting and fishing!

Clyde played electric bass... Given your situation I'd take him first chance I got. I hope he hangs around for you. Seeing many does? That might be the deciding factor.
