Had no idea they could live in salt water

Had no idea they could live in salt water - 07/06/16 02:24 PM

Caught these gator gar in the canals leading to the intercostal water way. I didn't know they could live in saltwater but I'm learning now they can but prefer the still water of the canals over the open ocean.

Nice gator gars! What's up with the rope rig around him in the third pic? Getting him to tow the boat?

I've seen them cruise through the lights while fishing the piers at night in the surf. Pretty cool when you see one of those big ol' shadows cruise through.

I caught a blue cat also off the same dock.

I caught them off a dock and used the rope to pull them up. They were all released to fight again.

Nice catch and THANK YOU for the release. That fish was probably 40 years plus! Somehow they seem to deserve a fair release.

We fished out of Kontiki at Rockport early this spring and one night while fishing on the peir had a gator gar swim by a few times, not that big and couldn't get him to bite, but he sat in the lights of the peer a bit and then moseyed on.

Yes Sir I've seen big gator gar swimming in the bay a few times. The first time I was a kid and several of them swam by my brother and I when we were wading in chest deep water, they were way bigger than me. eek2 Talk about not being able to stick a greased BB somewhere...

Nice catch Vaniller Jesus.

We caught a big one in Christmas bay one time on a 6" long live mullet.

It's weird to see them out there in the salt.

Very common sight in brackish water though

Buddy shot a monster gar (well over 6 foot) off his pier in Dickinson. I also didn't realize they lived in saltwater.

Was fishing at Indianola a few weeks ago at night for specks. They had a new sign at the marina that said not to feed the gators. Yea, gator, not gator GAR. Well, lo and behold about midnight a big old gator, probably a good 10 feet long, goes cruising by. Had no idea gators could adapt to salt water, but then again, there was a lot of fresh water in the bay because of all the runoff.
