It's a Texas brown snake AKA Dekay's snake.
Looked up a photo and that looks to be right.
I've been studying herpetolgy for 30 years. Imagine what I would know if I had Google back in the day.
Very common in Texas, we always called them a garden snakes as a generic term. Only snake I kill on sight is a Copperhead, even a rattler will get "relocated". Don't have cottonmouth where I am, so those would get the blade as well.
