They said there were no fish in that pond.... - 02/23/16 03:12 PM

I love it when they tell me there are no fish left in a pond. Between the rancher selling water out of this pond to a fracking company a couple of years ago and the drought before that, it was drawn down to a big puddle. It filled up with all of the rain last year and seems to have recovered.

I told everyone they were right. There are no fish in there.

Very nice.

I had a 3/4 acre pond just about dry up on me. One day I had almost 70 catfish die all at the same time that where from 5 to 12 pounds. All the bigger ones. Then as the water continued to drop to just a puddle, I decided to dig out the bottom so it would be deeper and have some holes in it in case we had another summer with temps over 100 degrees every day. I dug down as deep as I could with my backhoe and probably made it a couple thousand square feet. Then I drained what water was left into the hole and was shocked at how many fish where still alive in just a few inches of water and super slimy mud. There was easily hundreds of them in there!!!! Most where just fingerlings, but a few where a bit bigger. Since then, the pond has filled up and remained full. Nobody has ever fished that pond since then.

I made that mistake uttering no fish in that pond. Then my buddies started pulling slab crappies and 2-5 lbs bass out of a tiny stock tank hammer

BTW good catches up

My grandmother had a very small pond on her property when I was younger and no one ever fished it. One morning after bow hunting the back of her property, a find and me decided o throw a few lines even though this pond had been nothing but a mud hole a few years prior. First cast, 3.5 lb large mouth. Second cast my buddy caught a 5 lb large mouth. All in all we caught about 15 large mouths varying from 2 lbs to 6 lbs. We were shocked and had a great time.

Good catch, I have caught some good ones in ponds that "had no fish". Also seems easier to catch fish from those no fish ponds since they have not seen lures presented to them.

Looks like you had a lot of fun

Many people do not understand this but guys like me grew up fishing Texas stock ponds - if you gave me a choice as to where I wanted to fish anywhere in the world I would tell you a good Texas stock pond - I have caught 10 pound bass out of 2 acre ponds with a lightweight rod and reel - nothing better in my opinion

Love those fishless ponds! Usually if it has water I'll fish it.
