Opening morning lost (0r I thought missed) now found - 02/22/16 12:53 AM
`Opening morning on the way to the stand we got stuck right next to the stand (it had been raining for several days). we spent an hour gathering limbs, going back and forth, you know how it goes. We finally got out and figured we made enough noise that our morning was ruined. We pulled the chip from the cam and turned around to leave. About 200 yards stood what I knew to be a great buck. I sent a .308 round from the window of the parked truck and could have sworn I hit home, I thought he acted like he was hit then ran out of site. we looked for hours, from where he was when I shot, where he ran, to where I thought he would have gone, no blood, no nothing. Again, it was raining, and had been heavily for days. The field was about 5 years overgrown and visibility was very limited. I eventually gave up, with the lack of blood and sign, I assumed I somehow missed. Looked for buzzards for the next few days with no results, so he was a clean miss or a terrible shot.
This last week my buddy was mowing and found him about 75 yards from where I shot him (definitely same buck, as I have him on cam). Had the grass been cut he would have been in plan sight.
Needless to say I am thankful.
