Awesome work !! What kind of sewing machine do you use on the purses? My wife sews purses and is thinking about expanding to doing leather as well.

Marrying into the family will be tough because I only have one sister. Lots of brothers though, and with the recent supreme court ruling...

To sew leather you need an industrial walking foot machine, preferably with compound feed.

I personally use a Consew 206RB which was mostly used for upholstery, canvas tarps, parachutes, sails, and stuff like that. It will sew up to 3/8" thick leather though. Mine is a flatbed machine, so purses are tough to sew. Ideally, you would want a cylinder arm walking foot machine

The world of sewing machines is very complicated because they are extremely expensive to manufacture, and leather sewing machine are in relatively low demand on the industrial scale so most machines are simply copies of old designs by companies like Singer, Juki, and Adler. The really old machines (~75-100 years old) were all made in the USA or countries like Germany and a lot of them are still sewing as well today as the day they were manufactured. The quality was so good on those machines, Singer had to start taking trade ins and destroying old machines so they could actually sell new machines. Once manufacturing became too expensive in countries like the USA and Germany, sewing machines were manufactured in other european countries and Japan. Companies would buy old stock of machines and just put their label on it, or refurbish old machines and put their label on it. Once it became too expensive there, manufacturing is basically all in China now for Industrial Sewing machines, and you know how the Chinese do business. They steal copyright designs from all the old standard machines and are now making "clones" as they are called in the sewing world. The big three clone dealerships in the United States sell machines under the name brands Cowboy, Cobra, and Techsew. Name brand machines are Juki, Adler, and Consew. Plus there are a million other brands and copies floating around as well, not to mention sub models with varying features for varying industrial sewing applications.

If you do decide to get her a leather sewing machine, make sure to do some homework to make sure you are getting an appropriate machine that will do the intended work.

Thanks for that. She had a Brother Quatro and we just picked up a 10 needle Brother embroidery machine yesterday. Maybe get a leather machine in the future. Your leather work looks really nice.
