I can buy over a thousand ft. of panels for each dead Ibex. Digging down next to the existing fence with the dozer then wiring up the panels. "Knock on wood" so far have not had any coyotes dig under or Axis tear up what I have put up.

Don't blame you one bit, if they don't rust, they should be there alooong time. "cheap" insurance for sure.

Spensive!

But easier than 5' Red Brand non-climb that I will be encircling the shop and house with to keep cpyotes and hogs out of my yard.

We did the same thing just a matter of time before they dig under it just nature of the beast. Don't get me wrong it helps but you will still have to drive the fence once a month looking for holes. If you can bend or find some U shape rebar and drive it down on the bottom in the middle of every panel it helps a lot of work but it helps keep it down close to the ground. Good luck!

Most of the place they would need carbide tipped claws to dig under. I am tying it to the existing net wire fence so it is not moving. And yes I check the fences more than once a month.

Sorry for you expense, dk. I hate coyotes!

Re: Fence work for coyotes and Axis - 08/23/15 06:33 PM

Hog panel is better, will save on stretching labor but probably will cost more in the long run. Best thing for coyotes is keeping mesh on the bottom, bury holes by pushing rocks, logs, etc. on the holes, and snare the holes they make and or cover them again and again! Hard to win against coyotes though. They just keep coming. Good luck.

How are hog panels better? These are 4"X4"X 48"X 20' long galvanized panels. You don't stretch them.

Good luck to ya Don on keeping the varmints out. We have done miles of predator wire buried next to HF and tried to secure all entry gates as much as possible but if they want in their gonna get in, but it has slowed the progress. They will also climb till they find a hole they can make it through. The best thing to do is stay on top of them year round with a solid predator program

Very true. And I do that. But every once in a while they get through. But most that check in do not check out.

Re: Fence work for coyotes and Axis - 08/24/15 01:23 PM

If I had that much trouble with varmints, I'd build a few traps 'into' the fence;
Make a hole in the 4x4 fence near the bottom, and attach/connect a fully enclosed trap on the INSIDE.
No need to bait - varmints will SEEK an easy way in (a hole in the fence) as mentioned earlier - then get 'stuck' in your box (trap).

Check traps often (or place in locations you can 'glass' daily with binocs.
I did this for chicken pen that had constant 'visitors'.
Pen was even covered with wire fence on top - but varmints always wanted in.
I gave them a 'way in' , but only for 2' - works wonderfully!

Found a dead Axis Doe yesterday. Skinned out her neck and did not look like it was a coyote kill. I guess stuff just has to die like us humans do.

don k how are those cedar posts holding up when you dig down next to them? Have you had to replace any?

We've got lots of fence to replace and lots of limestone as I'm sure you are aware.

I found a dead Axis doe this past May that looked like she must have died trying to have a fawn! Mother Nature culls her own herd from time to time I guess.

They are good except the ones I get a little too close to with the dozer. One good thing about cedar is the heart never rots. If you start with a good heart cedar it will last forever.

That should help a lot. Lost a goat to a coyote last night so they are on my hit list for the next month or two.

Re: Fence work for coyotes and Axis - 08/25/15 04:37 PM

I saw a ranch in South Texas that would leave the holes that the coyotes had dug under the fence, and then put a trap in the hole. 1500 acre ranch and they caught 175+ coyotes the first year. After that they only averaged about 1 per month.

What happens if a pig tries to get through the hole? Does the snare work on them?

Eddie, you can buy snares just for hogs, but a good coyote snare will take most of the small to mid sized ones.

Usually catch them by the nose.

Interesting. Where do you buy snares? I thought they where just a length of cable with a loop at the end. Guess I need to learn what a snare is and then how to use them!!!

I buy the parts and make my own.
