Weekend Casualty

Weekend Casualty - 07/20/15 01:54 PM

Headed down to our place this weekend. Filled feed shredded and a few other odds and ends. Pulled cam chips and had quite a few hogs hitting one of our bow set ups. Didn't have the bow with me so decided to sit it with my brothers marlin 45-70. Mosquitoes were horrible but other than that it was a short pleasant sit. Climbed into the tripod at 6 and around 6:30 I had two boars around 150 lbs come in. They looked pretty spooky and were smelling where I had walked in and then testing the air. I got ready but hoped they would stick around for the feeder to go off and maybe I would get a nice sow or one of the bruisers that had been on the cams. The first one spooked and darted off I shot this one on the run for the brush. First shot was hi and back but knocked him down enough to load and put a finisher on him as he was making it to the brush line. Second shot was square on the shoulder and laid him down good!

Felt bad I shredded over the top of what I would guess is a quail nest, the next morning a karakara ate all but 3 of the eggs, think it was abandoned. Saw dozens of quail all shapes and sizes from little bitty guys to full grown birds, should be a healthy year for them.

Good shooting. Shame about the eggs, but I guess Caracaras got to eat too.

I like carbines and big fat bullets so its right in my wheel house.

Not all that impressed with the performance of the bullets at the moment. Two hogs shot with it and no exits. It did knock this one flat once I did my part and put a good hit on him. I should have just shot as soon as he presented a good shot instead of getting greedy and trying to wait it out for a bigger one.

Believe im going to get some 405 soft points or hard cast loaded up in it, think they will do a better job than the 300 grainers in the federals I was shooting. It is not overly pleasant to shoot from the bench with full house loads, but off hand isn't too bad and I can say that shooting from the stand I didn't notice the recoil any more than with my 243, was a pleasure to shoot and the short lever gun made the follow up fast.
