Have enjoyed my old Compadre for many years. Got a sweet deal on a newer, bigger, badder one and had to squeeze the trigger.
Burnt a few, nailed a few, always enjoyed the journey.

I have one like your old one, and I WILL get that thicker one next buy. Its a bit smaller, but like the heavier metal for sure. Way to go Stub.

That looks like an old New Braunsful smoker like I have. I modified mine by welding the fire pit to the smoke box and closing off most of the hole in between, then adding plate to the bottom of the smoke box to channel the heat and smoke across the box eliminating the hot spot. Then I increased the chimney to four inch pipe. Threw in a couple of fire bricks in the smoke channel to store heat and finally added a second grate below the first to enable double decker smoking. It works so good I'll use it until it decomposes. That purty new smoker looks a lot like my finished product and I'll bet it'll do just as well. Congrats !
