TNew calf in the pasture - 07/07/15 09:28 PM

New bull calf in the pasture this morning. BIG bull calf. The bull was black, not sure where the red came from. This is the first calf she has ever thrown that wasn't black and white. Good lookin calf though. Our solid red cow threw a solid black calf ffrom this bull, go figure.

Here is the black heifer calf from last week from the same bull. She threw a solid red calf last year.

Cool deal. It's a mystery to me how the colors work when a calf is born. confused2

Does color matter when it comes to cattle value?

Always good to see a healthy calf on the ground but I do not like summertime calfs myself. He looks great.

Two good looking calves!! I work in the foodservice industry and if a cow is more than 50% black it is considered an Angus believe it or not. A lot of the Angus meat programs bring a premium price for their products.

Most Angus, Brangus, and Limosine black bulls carry a red recessive gene. Every once in a while it lines up just right on the Punet Square of life and you are born a red calf from black cattle.

Great looking calves, I always seemed to do good at the sale with a white face for some reason , but not by much. I have had a few red calves out of a black angus bull too, but many of my cows had some red or solid.

Yep, and if momma has that much white on her there's no telling what all is in there. Also agree with the possibility of the neighbor's bull.

We have solid black cattle (all Brangus, mostly from registered stock) and about once every three years we get a red calf. About 1 in 60 or so for us but that may have changed since we've switched bulls twice in the last three years (one death, one wouldn't stay home so he found himself at the auction barn).

I just sold a load of angus yearlings a month ago and they were averaging 1.97 to 2.05 a lb.When I got into the business I was told by my mentor stick with black cows, it has worked well for me.
